      Koi with big bulging eyes...

I just came back from a customer that has a huge 28" koi with bulging eyes in a pond app. 8' deep....great pond inside their living room....super filtration...great people...we are thinking about moving this koi into a 4' pond to see if the bulging eyes go down then back to normal...has anyone ever had this happen and tryed what we will be doing? I'm told this will work. This isn't any disease...we'll let you know what happens.

I had a little Koi that developed an ulcer from infection after flukes. While in the hospital, it developed the bulging eyes so bad I thought they would pop. Next it swelled and pineconed so bad that it hemorhaged around the scales. I was waiting for it to die.

Lee B recommended salt to .6 and temps in mid 80's. It worked, and the fish is fine today.

To be dressed appropriately still means having to be dressed.

I've been told I don't listen, or something like that.

      Did this fish receive antibiotics?

I have heared that salt works to get rid of bulging eyes. I think it was Steve Childers that wrote something about that long time ago. Was it you Steve??

What does 8' deep pond has to do with it? My pond is 8' with 54F water. But, as JR is hinting at....there are no air domes running when the water is 55F or below. And no waterfall/weir either.

Before moving the fish....did you measure the water parameters including O2 level? What are those parameters in the 4' pond? Without being able to compare the water parameters in the two ponds, it is hard to come to any conclusions about what happened to the koi, or what will help.

Bulging eyes can come from many causes. If just pressure gradient then shallower pond or salt may help. But many other causes. Internal organ damage especailly kidney. Can come from over use of AB's since they are cleared by kidney. Do not need external signs

if the water is in the lower 50s....just turn off the air domes and bypass a waterfall....see what happens.....but....measure O2 levels before and again days later. See if the O2 level falls.

This tread was very interesting to follow. I certainly learned something new!!! I had no idea that a very deep pond with air domes running could possibly cause this type of problem. I hope you will follow up to let us know how this fish recovers.

      bulging eyesf

3 years ago I went to Maruyama, Japan and
bought 4 kohaku. One of them have very large
bulging eyes. She is 6 year old now and still
have big eyes. We call her Lefty.
Went back to Maruyama koi farm 7 weeks ago
and I noticed that some of his kohaku have big
      eyes. May be genetic?
My pond is 4 foot deep.

if depth and presure change are a possible problem I don't think a 8 foot range is deep enough to be a factor...but this is only a educated guess from limited scuba knowledge

I believe you need O2 levels in the >15mg/L range for that to be the cause of the problem. You won't get that at 8' unless the water is cold and you are running air domes or venturis or something to inject O2.

I want to add something I was told, which is different from all the above, and get your opinions.

This summer I bought a koi that a month later developed bulging eyes, both eyes. I called the dealer and he told me the fish had what is called "Popeye". That it was caused by internal problems, such as a tumor, that it was born with, not any disease. He said there was no treatment for it and it would probably die, which it did. He also offered to replace the fish for free.

      Comments on "Popeye" please.

Ok ,so if the airdomes are the black membrane type, have them shut off the domes air supply and withhold all food for five days. If this remedies the situation, consider using air discs on the drains instead of the membrane type. Additionaly you could separate out a test group and keep them in a shallow pond setting to see if the gases leave the body naturally.
