      Drylok for KOI pond

Looking for advice in using Drylok on a koi pond. I have a koi pond constructed with poured concrete bottom and wall block for the sides. The bottom and the sides have been rendered with mortar. I am looking for a paint/epoxy of some sort to protect the fish from the cement. The pond at this point holds water perfectly fine. I have been soaking it for about a month with pool acid. I still do not feel safe about the lime in the cement and would like to paint it further. Herco rubber is too expensive as there is about 1200sq ft of surface area. Is Drylok a good option? Please help.

Bui I don't know anything about drylok but some here have used a product called sani-tread or sani-tred? I think it's only available onine through the company that makes it. Might search on it. It was a DIY project and less expensive than polyurea, though if I could afford to do that I sure would!

      Bui,

I used Drylok on my pond. I used gray color. I wanted black but they don't have that color. My pond is 1.5 year old.

I talked to that vendor about dryloc. You would want to use the water-based version. At the DIY stores you usually can only get white. But they can put black tint into it to create a gray color. If you get gray version, using tint you can make it even darker gray. In 5 gallon pails it is much cheaper than many other sealers. If you are coating a block wall, I would first coat it with mortar to make a smooth wall surface. After it cures for a few days, then do the dryloc.

Thanks to all that replied so far! I have been looking at the water based version at Home Depot. They only have white. I was at Walmart earlier today and saw Gray for $20/gal. Looks like a good option. How long is the wait after the 2nd coat. I thought I saw it say to wait 5 days? Did you all have to wait long in your application?

Bui and others, I had always wondered if drylok would work I used it to seal basement good stuff, nice info to know thanks.

Also Bui, I test concrete and just thought when you mentioned the color dilemma that most concrete ready mix plants sell supplies also and there are many pigment dies to put in concrete to make any color, and am thinking why would they not work in this stuff Concrete is sand gravel and WATER and the white is WATER based it should work.

the concree gray colorant at the DIY stores is like ground charcol. It has a rough texture. I would not put that in my pond liner.

Get gray dryloc and then have them put black tint in. You will get a much darker gray.

Which Drylok product have you used? Here is their website: http://www.ugl.com/DRYLOKFrame.html. It looks like there are 2 main types, latex-based and oil-based. They both come in white, beige, grey and blue. Is the latex-based one the water-based product referred to listed here?
The next question is: what happens when the concrete cracks? Sanitred & polyurea expand--does Drylok expand as well?

No I have seen drylock crack, it is very solid and non flexible. That would be my main concern especially in a colder climate.

I would honestly stick with a flexible product like Sanitred if you have your heart set on a paint on product instead of a liner.

      Oil Base

I used the oil base and it has worked well for me for 5 years so far. Why is there a problem with the oil base ?

Anyone near Austin knows where I can get gray Drylok in a 5 gals pal? I am new to the area and is not very familiar with Austin at all. Homedepot only have white in 1 gal. Walmart have 1 gal gray. Lowes have 5 gals pal but only in white and they would not order them for me. I need 2 of these pals.

Ace Hardware has them here in Wimberley and over in Sattler (just saw them today ) so I am sure they do up in Austin. I would call around to area stores to see if they carry that size...if not ask them to order you some.
