      Banana Help

Alright so heres the story, 1 of my 2 banana plants (Dwarf Cavendish) is rotting on the main stem. It has put up 2 babies this past week and the leaf it was growing has stopped growing. What I am wondering is what should i do? Should i cut off the main stem? I have stopped watering it since i noticed the little squishy discolored area on the stem. Also it is potted and inside the house as it gets too cold for a tropical plant outside in NY @ least I think. Ive taken it outside for today (high 89) and will be taking it back in because its going to rain. Also if it does die, does anyone know StarkBros gurantee, is it any more than a year or just a year(these were ordered in Spring 2004)? We have always ordered our fruit trees from them (@ least mother has), this past year is the only year that i think we have had issues with plants dieing (Both of the 2 Meyer lemons i ordered died). We didn't get our $ back on those because they were part of a package deal, and we dont really need lemons.
      Thank You Much

ACKoi, I don't know a lot about bananas but can tell you that my Musa Basjoo behaved in that fashion when I first got them last year. I planted them up and had them in the house since our weather was still too cold to put them out. The main plant started to die, I was about ready to email the seller when I noticed that there were several pups starting to grow. I am guessing that the shock of being uprooted, shipped and then kept in less than optimal temps and conditions was too much for the main plant. Both plants did well for me thru the summer, tho I lost one over the winter. The other is now 4 feet high and has 4 or 5 pups going right now.

I don't know about the bananas but the Meyer lemons can't be left out in the winter in my zone 6 in RI. They grow fine in Vegas, and actually flouish there for me. They really are great lemons, sorry you lost them.

      Musa Basjoo

thanks lynn, good to hear that theres a good possibility of it surviving. Musa Basjoo is supposed to be hardy to -20 F give or take with very good mulching. You can probably (if you haven't already) plant it directly in the ground. I'm thinking of ordering 1 myself as long as mother and father let me Its a tall one 18 feet, and possibly 2 feet a week according to "The Banana Tree" store website.

Put it outside its not to cold for it now. cut off the rotten stem. I dig mine up in the winter shake the dirt off and cutt off the tops and stand them up in an old bucket in the corner of my laundry room. I dont try to keep them growing over winter. I let them go dormant.

Yup Koimum, they died, if my memory is still good lol, before summer ended, but thats only if my memory is correct.

O i remember another problem im having with my tropical plants! lol
Some of my citruses are having problems with very shallow roots even though i water them deeply in their pots. Similar to what was happening to the lemons, this time i think its the Key Lime .

That's what they say, ACKoi, so I experimented, left one out last winter, brought one in....the one left out is dead.

well the banana that was having problems is doing great now! I didn't cut the banana down to the ground because I was afraid to do so. What i did was I pealed the affected leave stalks off until i got to good tissue. The banana for some reason started growing small leaves as if it was a Pup again. It also produced 4 pups, 2 of which are considerably larger than the mother plant itself. What I would like to know is when to cut the pups off, they have a thickness of around 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" about a cardboard toilet paper tube thing (only thing i could think of LOL) Attached are pictures of the plant.

WOOT WOOT!!! lol coool, yea those beetles are Terrible!

I actually decided to cut the pups off, and i cut 3 out of the 4 off. I should've only cut 2 off but i decided to do 3. the 3rd i dont think has enough roots:mad: . now i need to know if anyone knows anything about what i should do with the pups, should I:
1-Put them in water (Read somewhere that bananas can do Ok in water)
2-Pot them up with rooting hormones
3-Any of the above with the addition of bottom heat and inside the house
      4-#s 1 or 2 outside
