On the odd occasion that I forgot to close the valve for the pond return when flushing my S&G (), and my pond would go super cloudy from the waste, it is crystal clear again a couple hours later. I throw koi clay in, so that could be helping, but I feel that the S& G just recleans the water.

Also, I had an old sub pump running a little fountain a few years ago, that failed and leaked a slick of oil all over the water surface. I had no idea what to do, so I turned off the bottom drain and sent all the water through the skimmer to the S&G. Within an hour the oil was gone. I flushed the S&G a couple days in a row and never suffered any ill effects.

Is it bad to turn off the pump & plug both of the outlets during the blowing process to conserve water? This is my first winter with a sand & gravel filter and I'd like to avoid doing too much water changes in the winter, due to the ammonia levels in the tap.

Also is there a downside of using a powerful blower(5HP range)? I currently use 1HP but would like to upgrade to at least 2HP. I'm thinking the stronger the air churns the water and disturbs the gravel/sand, the filter is less likely to form anaerobic pockets.

I’ve always churned mine with the pump off because my small ponds don’t need that large of a water change by running the pump the whole time. There have been threads debating the pros and cons of this, but it can certainly work.

I use a 4hp dog dryer and have a ball valve on the pipe to control the amount of churn - I bleed off quite a bit of air!
