Have it, never had to use it

From Advanced Koi Care by Nicholas Saint-Erne, DVM, Pg. 149:

      "Usage:
Chloramine-T is used to treat bacterial gill disease and other bacterial infections. It can also be used to control monogenean trematodes (skin and gill flukes).

      Dosage:
It is important to know the pH and total hardness of the pond water before treating with Chloramine-T. Soft water and low pH increase toxicity of Chloramine-T and high pH and hardness reduce its effectiveness. Use the following chart to determine appropriate dose.

      pH Soft Water Hard Water
      6.0 2.5 mg/L 7.0 mg/L
      6.5 5.0 10.0
      7.0 10.0 15.0
      7.5 15.0 18.0
      8.0 20.0 20.0

      Treatment Procedure:
Dissolve the appropriate amount of Chloramine-T in a plastic container of deionized water, making sure it is well mixed. Then disperse evenly over a large are of the pond surface so that spots of high concentration are avoided. After 4 hours, perform a 25-50% partial water change. Be sure to add dechlorinator to the new water. Repeat treatment every 1-2 days for up to 4 times if needed.

For treatment of an individual koi, remove it from the pond and place it into a large plastic container of pond water. Use an air stone and pump to provide adequate aeration. Add the appropriate amount of chemical to the water and mix thoroughly. After 4 hours, remove the fish and return it to the pond. Repeat every 1-2 days for up to 4 times."

Chloramine-T has always been used for bacterial gill disease, and whenever a fish has compromised gills. The first instances of KHV in the U.S. were initially thought to be a particularly virulent strain of BGD.

I haven't ever used it. Hopefully, someone will pipe in who has experience with it.

      Hi,

I have used Chloramine T in my quarantine tank to treat Bacterial Gill Disease. It is also sold by Argent Labs under the name BGDX. The dosage that I used is 3 grams per 100 gallons of water. I have never used it to treat flukes, costia, etc So I can't help you there. Since there are other products specifically designed to deal with those parasites, that is what I use. I can tell you that it worked well in clearing up the gills on the fish that I treated.

What would be the "down" side to using it. I've been curious about this for some time, just never used it. Most suggest it for bacterial infections. I know it can kick your filter pretty bad.

I'm thinking it may be good for individual fish that have a problem (bath style), but I'm not sure how good it would be to do a whole pond. Further, I *really* have a problem with any treatment that requires massive water treatments. My water pressure sucks; I've never put a flow meter on it, but I know it takes 25-30 minutes (at full blast, with no other water being used) through a 5/8" hose to replace 200 gallons of water dumped for a water change.

With all of the bacterial infections that seem to be going around, it would be nice to have a cheap, easily obtainable option.

This is what I posted in the ER Sticky:

      Chloramine T Dip:

For bacterial gill disease. This is very effective as a dip. Dosing is 1 gram per 10 gallons, five days consecutively for one hour. Do not mix this with any other treatments. Use old (conditioned) tank or pond water with no dechlor and add aeration to the container. I have not seen any printed directions for this, nor am I aware of any others who have used it this way. I have used it on several occasions including a shipment of 180 small Japanese imports. It has proven to be very effective yet appears to be completely safe. Using it in the pond or quarantine tank will kill the beneficial bacteria in the filtration system, so a dip makes perfect sense.

Recently one of my clients used the dip on four koi around 14-18". All have recovered very nicely.
