      Showa?

These were two hand picked by Junichi for my wife and I
      We’re just getting into koi.

Yeah definitely Showa. The one towards the front has an interesting face pattern. Will be fun to watch that one develop as the sumi comes up - looks like more black will develop on the head.

The pics are less than ideal to really assess things accurately. That said if I were to guess these were chosen for good beni and future sumi development as one would generally try to do in a showa. The bodies look pretty good actually but really hard to say from the photo. You will not end up with a champion koi with either of these, but I am sure that was reflected in the price (not meant to offend just my appraisal). If the sumi rises and deepens you'll end up extremely happy. Enjoy!

Yes Junichi asked my wife and I what are your plans with your koi? Just pond life or comepetition? I said a little bit of both and wife wife said Competition. . The one with the unique market on the face was picked by junichis student and mentee. He’s a new judge and the second one was done by Junichi. I wonder if these will get to 30” +. Inches in my 1000 gallon. I’ll have to put a second filtration system on the pond soon. Thank you for the appraisals

If you want a GOOD Showa, you need the best possible Kohaku like so:

Then you take a stunning Shiro Utsuri and superimpose its pattern on top of the Kohaku.

And just like that, BAM, you have a show winner

      Kindai Showa great learning koi
It is one variety that require patience for all three colors to peak at the same time
Sumi could take years to surface and sometimes beni could not hold up
I think you’re lucky with a good start help from Junichi San
Growing big koi involved so many factors
      Time to learn all these
But base on your current pond size and filtration they might get to avg 24” most

. That’s amazing I wonder how long it’ll take the sumi to come up right now the pattern is a little off balance.

It is better to wait for a fish to finish. I paid a few bucks for this showa I got today. You want to pay attention to skin quality. This fish has been indoors and needs natural light..but the skin is very good

I got these only a few months into koi keeping. Bad water quality, lack of filtration and oxygen.. and water parameters caused both of them to jump out of the pond... $210 each....

Heres a vid of when I first got them...
