Almost forgot too bring in the Bananas

These are the ones that were planted in the ground and are not hardy. Well not for me they arent but they were for my cousin that passed away this summer. The other pic is what I am doing with my amarillis bulbs and my colocasia

Almost forgot too bring these in and its supposed too get too 39 tonight, The green one I think are Orinoco my neighbor has had a start of them for more than 50 years. The plants get quite big luckily mine are only 2 years old and we had bad droughts both summers so they did not grow much. Well one big clump was 3 stalks and it was all I could do too bring them inside. The large red one I will be lucky if it survives but I have had it for years this is the first time I had too bareroot it though. I had 5 others but they did not make it through the dormancy last winter on my porch. This year they are in a shower stall that I cant get unstopped and tired of paying people too fix it and an hour later its stopped up again.

I've got 20 plus non cold hardy bananas in 20" pots ranging from 5ft to over 8ft. did a lot of dividing this year, plants loved it. In the past I would cut back bananas and bring pots into small 6x8 greenhouse. Well with every thing else that has to go in there I've got way too much to fit. Needless to say those pots weigh around 150 pounds each. Sorry for the long explanation. Now for my question, please explain to me bare rooting, how much you cut back bananas and their storage requirements.

since you have been growing bananas as long as you have. You should no they dont have a vast root system more like a root ball. I just dig mine up shake the soil off the roots and cut off the top and leaves. I cut them further back if they wont stand up in a corner of the laundry room or here I have them in a shower. They will lose a whole lot of water weight before spring and ever so often one will not make it if its not big enough. The large ones I never have a problem with. Now most of these I bare root are the standard green type that have heavy trunks. I have even in the past bare rooted my Ae Ae bananas and most survived. you can do the large Borneo Giant Alocasia this way too. Siam Ruby is the hardest of all bananas I have grown too winter over.
