      Winter Pond - Cover

I have planned on putting a portable shelter over my pond this winter. It is one of the Shelter-Logic items which has a dark cover. My thinking - to make it easier for me to see what is going on and checking the de-icers, etc. when there is a lot of snow.

I recently read a Koi-based article which declared the fish need the sunlight, even during their hibernation time. The basis was that it gives the Koi a couple more months of grow time. (?)

What does that mean to all the people who put their koi into a cold garage or cover with a solid tarp?

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I still could use the same frame and put visquine as a cover instead of the dark cover. Not happily, but I could.

You could always put lights under the cover. My covers are poly carb, so I shine lights through it.

Is that the 8mm multiwall poly? Do you have any clocking underneath or just the studs?

      WOW!!! I'm envious!

The posts I referred to were talking about sunlight. With your covering, I would assume sunlight still comes through. My 'tent/shelter' has a dark material. I can hang lights inside but it won't get any sunlight.

It is 16mm triple wall polycarb. It’s affixed to 4x2 wood with screws through the studs.

Can’t see that being too much of an issue, my grow on tank is indoors and gets no sunlight; just the led lights. Quite a few folk do similar.

I believe the common carp's innate and current 'thought processes' take in a combination of light (photoperiod), water temperature, water quality, and food availability to 'decide' when to 'sleep,' turpor, develop eggs, spawn, grow, and store fat.

That’s what I thought, hence just heat and food alone would not be enough, in the main pond; I extend their day with lights by about 6 hours currently. In my grown on tank, lights are on from 6am to 9;30pm each day and temp is at 73f.
