      Bakki Shower with Sieve screen

      Hello all,

I am going to build an DIY Bakki shower with details:
      1. I will use 48''x15''x11'' StakPak from USPlastic; 4 layers.
      2. I want to put a Sieve mesh on the top layer.

      Question :
      1. Where can I buy the sieve mesh ? (20''x50'')
      2. How big the hole should be ? (Before water go to the Bakki shower, I already has Sieve filter (200 micron))

Thank you so much for your help

Welcome and thanks for joining Koiphen!

So you already have a 200 micron sieve before the shower? If so, why do you want to use
another screen on the top layer of the shower? And if you did, how would you handle the waste
      it produces on the screen?
How big of a hole for what? The pipe leading to the shower?

Thank you for your response Steve.
      1. Yes, I do have UltraSieve III before the shower. I think the screen is 200 - 300 micron
      2. I want the screen on the top layer because I am afraid of fish waste stuck on my filter media. I also get the idea from this guy : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljJVvvZX0ws&t=3s
      3. The Youtube link show me the idea and how to clean the top screen
      4. I want to know how big the screen hole size. I see people in this forum usually use 60 micron screen.

Another question : As I know, Jmat or K1 still have fish waste because we use it to feed beneficial bacteria. Bakki Shower, what will beneficial bacteria eat ?

      Thank you all again.

Hello, I have the Ultrasieve 3 just like you, and I put another 250 micron tray on top of my diy shower filter. But it's more work than you think, you have to clean the top tray more often because of the waste. It's the waste get stuck on the screen and then the water is slow down also. I'm still thinking another way to do that, maybe I just let the water come straight down to the media.

We want to get the solid waste out of the system as early/fast as possible, hence mechanical filters like RDFs, Sieves, bead filters, Sand&Gravel filters,....
The moving beds and showers are to remove the bio waste dissolved in water. The beneficial bacteria should feed of this waste, not the solid stuff that we can see with our eyes.

The biggest fish waste issue is not the solids... It is the dissolved Ammonia.

If you follow the rule of thumb for a shower of 2000 gph flow for each sq foot you should not have any problems.
So your Ultra sieve 111 is good for almost 8,000 gph, perfect for 4 sq foot tray top.

      Dear all,
      Thank you for your response.
1/ Do you think I should put extra sieve screen on the top shower layer?
2/ Because of my limited budget, I am going to use feather rock gravel. Do you think solid waste will stuck and block my filter media ?

      Thanks you all.

1/ No. The answer in part of question 2
2/ Solid waste should be filtered out already with the sieve. Water drops down the shower should be free of solid stuff that is bigger than the size of the filter mesh in your sieve

Just so you know, and this does not take away anything from what you are building but the name, a Bakki shower is only a Bakki shower if you are using MomotaroBakki media. Any other type of media used means it should just be called a 'shower' or, if you are using Rio Media, a 'Rio Shower'.
people like to vehemently defend their purchases and find it incredulous that anything could be better

      Thank Russell for correcting me.
