Check my eyes please. Nitrite test

The ammonia test from API is a Pain. The only way I can make a determination at lower levels on that one is to do a side by side with well water as a known.

I'm having trouble with the nitrite today though. At 16k gallons and so few fish I wonder if it'll get into the more readable ranges ever. I can't tell if this is nitrate starting to show up or not. Just looking at the card I'd say no, but when I test it side by side with well water known to have zero nitrite I swear it I'm seeing a more blue, less turquois result than the known zero sample. Seems to be a difference to my eyes. Opinions?

Are there digital tests for any of these?

Left pond, right fresh well water from several angles, ugh

I think it is best to only look at the tubes in front of a white background. In the top picture it looks blue, but in the second picture it looks a little purple. I would take the top picture and call it zero.

Hi Lori, I know what you mean, it's hard when the color is "just slightly off" but not to the next level on the card: I get that too. Just a little darker blue but not the pale orchid of .25.

When checking against the color cards I think sometimes you get a reflection of the colors themselves with the tubes when they're upright. When I'm not sure, I lay the card down flat and take the cap off the tube. Then hold the tube an inch or two above the card and look down into the tube. I get a clearer picture of the color without much interference from the colors on the card.

This "perpendicular" method is especially helpful for double-checking when trying to compare the Ammonia tests because the yellow and green colors are so similar when comparing the tubes while held parallel to the card. Just be sure the light is shining directly into the tube.

Thanks everyone! I was a little more excited than I should have been to think nitrites were finally showing up
