      Estimate for a gunite pond

Got an estimate today and want to know if this is a fair price?
      Pond = 17'x8'x4'

      Rebar.............$2500
      Gunite............$6800
      Plaster............$3500

Is plaster necessary? or can I paint water proofing over the gunite?

      Thanks

I would give Russ a call for a competitive bid so you can have something to compare it side by side to. Russ will probably bid to skip the plaster and gunite and do a solid pour of concrete with cyprex and then do a black interior.

Do you refer to plaster as marbelite as in gunite swimming pools?

The pond bottom would be less likely to accumulate dust and dirt between the rough pores of the gunite if marbelized.

The swishing of the fishes movement would get the dirt to the bottom drains quicker and out of the main pond into the filter system were

it can be drained off quickly.

I added a dark charcoal oxide to give the blackest pond look possible.

That is a ridiculous price for the gunite as it is about $750.00 a yard. At 8" thick you would only need 9 yards of gunite. Gunite is also not a smooth surface and is not water proof so you would need to plaster over it, or do polyurea, to keep the water in your pond.

      $750 x 9 = $6750.

I think what Russ meant is that $6800 for only 9 yards of gunite is way too expensive ….

Going to expenses that large why only 4 feet deep? Once filled actual water depth will be less.

How much does polyurea coating cost a square foot now?

Never had gunite sprayed before but based on a google search of pricing it sounds like you getting the "We don't want this job but will do it if your willing to pay to much price"

Yep - he should have said $755.56 is too much per yard. I guess that is contractor math

Yes, when I used to do gunnite ponds, in the Bay Area, the contractor I used had a minimum price of $4,000.00 but he would allow up to 20 cubic yards for that price. If you did a pond that used 4 yards of gunnite then you would pay the minimum and it would be $1,000.00 per yard. If you did 20 yards then you paid about $200.00 a yard. I stand by what I first said, "this is a ridiculous price for the gunnite as it is about $750.00 a yard." I am sure that the minimum pricing has changed in the last 5 years but it is still too much.

I didn't think I needed to clarify that statement any further but I guess I did.

I'm confused. So they will just use more material and do more work for the same price in the end? I'll stick to doing tile work lol, doesn't make sense to me.

Try California gunite. My buddys pond is about 10,000 gallons and was less then your 4,050 gallon. Everything is pretty inflated here in the bay area though lately

It's more like they really don't want to or need to take a smaller job than 20 cubic yards which they can charge $4k. They will do a smaller job as long as your willing to pay the same price as the bigger job. If not they don't care because they have other big jobs to do.

Just the same as if you had more custom high end work than you could manage and I tried to hire you to install some subway tile on my backsplash. You would be loosing money to spend a day at my job so you quote me the same price as a day at a high end job and I can pay it or keep looking.

I get it. But my expenses are going up so the customers price goes up also.

I consider subway tile hard to get flat
