      The Queens final days

She is the Queen of the pond and now she is in her final days. She is a 12 year old Aka Hajiro and the only female in the pond. The males have beaten her annually and both of here eyes are now gone, one two years ago and the other last year. She has not eaten for weeks now and is getting thinner in thinner and just sits on the bottom. I thought I would put up some pics of her every two years or so.

I'm so sorry you are losing her. I think 12 years old is also too young to go. I just lost my 12-year-old queen of my pond suddenly two weeks ago, and I am still in shock and missing her. Even though I know there was nothing I really could do, I still feel somehow there was something I should have or could have done. You have time, and hopefully the ability to pull her out of the pond where the boys are not; I hope yours pulls through somehow, I think she's still very pretty.

Yes like I said she is totally blind. She was feeding at the beginning of the summer but has not now for 2+ weeks. I have no quarantine tank big enough for her so she is on her own in her kingdom.

How about syncing food come on Mike or I are always foraging either in the algae or on the bottom. I would think they find a lot of their food by smell. I have a blind better but it seems to be able to find the food when I drop it in

I'm so very sorry for your loss david. She was like a bright shining star in her prime, but even in the last photos she still retained some of her sparkle, like a true queen.

nmtsaki, my sympathy goes out to you as well, for your loss. In the course of several weeks we each lost a 12 year old Koi (mine was a Shusui, Lola). How sad, and a little strange.

      What a lucky fish.

Out of the trillions of annual common carp fry, up from the adult billions eaten, and the millions culled, a chosen one lives in luxury to old age reproducing each year. Talk about the odds of winning the lottery.

Still a shame to see her go.

I agree, and to all of those out there that may face the same circumstance, I firmly believe that euthanasia is the proper thing to do. Why let a Koi sit there and wither away until it dies?

I did euthanize her. She was unable to sit on the bottom and was probably brain dead anyway. I did see her eating a little last week which surprised me.
