      Pond not doing well.

I am currently new to koi fish/ponds. We recently bought a house that had a pre-existing koi pond. Recently the koi have been lathargic and not eating much (if at all) our pond has been becoming more and more green as well, you canít teally see into the pond anymore. We recently added some water plants given too us by a friend who has koi (not sure if this could have caused it). Also our pond lost a lot of water due to a leaking filter so we refilled about half of it with the hose (our friend who has koi said this was okay?) I donít want to lose the koi. Any advice? We cleaned the filters a bit too and it doesnít seem to be helping.

Pictures of the pond and the filters would help tremendously. In the mean time, be sure you have some dechlorinator (brand names ChlorAm-x or Safe, both available on Amazon) as this should be added to the pond whenever you add water. Here is a good primer: http://koiorganisationinternational....keeping-course

Nice pond. Looks sunny like Bakersfield. I’ll have to build a sunshade Setup with maybe 90% shade cloth for pond before next summer.

I put a chlorine and amonia remover solution in it. I also use an aelgi remover solution. Is there something else I should be putting in?

Yes, air. Do you have an air pump to aerate the pond? Algae remover can be harmful if not dosed right and requires extra oxygen in the pond. Be careful to not continually add chemicals to the water instead of fixing the root of the problem. You could be doing more harm then good.

Yeah we have a pump and filtration system that cycles the water. We have a water fall too. Iím very encouraged to see them starting to function again. In the buffalo area where do you get supplies? I want to replace my UV light bulb and none of the pet stores had it. I heard mastersons?

Beezer, a waterfall does not provide adequate aeration when you add chemicals. I was referring to an air pump with an air stone to provide extra aeration to the pond. Your not going to get a uv bulb locally. Your better off asking on this forum and one of the dealers here will respond to the brand name uv you have.

Thanks for that info. I have ordered one and hopefully it will be in tomorrow. I also found the bulb I needed and ordered that too. This forum has been extremely helpful to me as an inexperienced koi keeper. I appreciate all the advice and help from this community!
