There is more than one way to plumb a Zakki sieve.
Mr. Whiskers is showing you a lower restrictive way (which is important if you are using energy efficient pumps) to plumb it.
If you are using a high pressure, less energy efficient pump, it makes less difference.

Ricshaw, I'm not really up on pump types. By your terminology would you call the Artesian2 A2-1/4-47 an energy efficient or high pressure pump? I have seen several other ways to plumb a Zakki, but it seems to me that if you are going to use a 3-way on the pressure side, you've either got to make a 90 inside the 3-way or come out of the pump with a 90 and then connect the 3-way to that, which seems a little cumbersome. That's why I was asking Catfish how he would do it.

I would use big sweep fittings before or after the 3 way to make direction changes , and then rotate the 3 way so that filter mode goes straight through it

The PerformancePro Artesian 2 A2-1/4-47 is a Low RPM Waterfall Pump. Which I would call an energy efficient pump.

Note: The PerformancePro Artesian 2 A2-1/4-47 is a self-priming pump, many (more) energy efficient pumps are not self-priming pumps.

It allways makes a difference , restrictions and loss of flow /head effect all pumps

I know We are allways trying to find space for equipment and plumbing , but in the above pic , I would rotate the 3 way so that the pump outlet that returns to the pond or feeds the next filter , goes straight through the 3 way . The backwash line doesn’t need to be straight through as We don’t use it very often .

Exactly the plan, just like in Zac's videos.

Since everyone convinced me the MC-50 is a bad choice, and I think I need something else for mechanical filtering besides the Zakki, I'm thinking of doing 2 Birdman type SG filters.

I'd be creative in having my incoming water go through the manifolds, into the zakkii, then out of the zakki in a large 180 degree-ish circle into the pump. Then put 2 SG filters in 55 Gallon barrels on a table (a good one) above the pump, which would drain to a DIY shower, then to the waterfall.

I'm really trying to fit everything in a roughly 3' x 9' platform in my shed, and still have room for all my typical homeowner crap.

Dang, that's a beautiful pond!! Looks more like a resort swimming pool than a Koi pond. As far as I know there is no one in Atlanta that comes close to designing filtration like this.

I have my pond dug, the bottom drain in, the skimmer in, and the first section of drain pipe ran to ground level. (as you know from my other posts) I have not plumbed in anything else, and this is the critical point. I just know that I am on the edge of an avoidable mistake or six, but I am unsure what to do. For every question I post, there are many conflicting pieces of advice. My fish are in a pool in my garage (that is currently leaking and will only hold so much longer) and I have a deadline of August 24 to fill the outdoor pond so we can put them in the ground on Aug 25th. This is very frustrating. Makes me think maybe I bit off more than I can chew with the pond build, and as a construction PM with engineering brains, that's saying a lot.

Anyway, you obviously have an amazing talent and eye for detail. I wish all my projects looked this amazing when the contractors left. Great job!
