Well I did some checking and yes bread can kill koi.
The kois metabolism is low as it is mid winter in Australia. So the koi's system is working at about 35%. This can cause issues for digestion. Yeast/bread can cause the koi to become constipated and this causes the bellies to expand. The weakest koi can die and the strong survive. Just as what happened to the poster. From his posting all is well so parasites are probably not the issue. Since he has never had problems with his fish over the years and the koi's symptoms are consistent with problems with bread. I tend to believe the bread is the culprit. But who knows what else those kids might have feed the koi as well.

In England some areas are not allowed to use bread as bait as it created issues with the carp and other fish.

And no the eyes are not sunken and no notches in nose.

From UK Daily Mail article on carp and white bread ban. So wheat is OK and white not? Ha Ha

Carp fishing is a big deal in some places and they use it as chum. Over the years have heard the cool water warnings but also a lot of videos posted of koi being fed in ice water. Must be Kenzen! Ha Ha. And what is the recomended cool water food - wheat based!

Ya and I can start posting the sights that say how it can affect the koi from England. But than it is just another he said she said thread.
So maybe you can explain how the owner was able to squeeze out white stuff (probably the bread) a week later. A carp passes food about every two hours since they do not have a stomach. So they most be constipated.

If you have a better explanation. Please post.

I might consider the koi died because of being over fed in a cool water environment but not white bread killed them.

The white bread carp dispute in the UK is nothing but BS.

I am just looking at what the poster has posted.

Cold water there for low metabolism rate.

Feed bread and we do not know what is in the bread that was made in Australia.

Fish became lethargic and gasping for air after eating the bread.

Fish started to die and only the older ones.

Bloated stomachs and white stuff came out of the fish

One that died had white stuff squeezed out of it.

It is impossible for a koi to have any bread squeezed out of it if healthy a week later.

Maybe the koi experts here can explain a condition that creates lethargic koi with large bellies and only the older ones are affected and die. And are able to squeeze out white stuff as well as other koi expelling white stuff.

So I well leave you with a simple fact. Yeast creates constipation with fish. This has been researched as such.

I have a hard time as many here on KP that bread can kill. But have to go with what has been posted. I believe that certain conditions aligned just right might have created the possibility of the issue.

Until someone can explain other possibilities of simptoms mentioned by the poster as something else. I well have to lean towards the bread as the issue.

Occam's razor: Heavily feed fish in cold water where digestion is at a low point and the fish becomes bloated. Fish like any other animal will eat more than they need. Bloating also puts pressure on vital organs which is why it can be fatal. This can happen with other feeds in coldwater.

I feed my other cool water species in coldwater while they still want to feed, but hydrate the feed to make it more digestible and already swelled to maximum size, and back off on the amount. I've even heard of trout dying in really coldwater if overfed. As in at close to freezing water temps near the surface.

I have no idea about the particular bread made in Australia that the koi ate.

So sorry. I always heard white bread was a treat for koi. Everything must be in moderation though.
