      Need help identifying gill condition

I'm new to this site and not sure if my previous post went through.

Has anyone seen a gill condition like this? I'm thinking it's either gill fluke, gill curling or a deformity I haven't noticed in the last year I've inherited my koi pond. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

It is not gill flukes nor is it gill curling. Half of the gill plate is missing on either side and there is nothing you can do.

Thank you for the information Russel. I've been told it could be a birth defect/deformity. Is this the case? Should I be concerned about taking him out of quarantine?

To me it either looks like it was born that way or bad nutrition or water quality when very small. I'm basing this on my clownfish breeding experience. I've seen gill deformities if I don't keep up on water changes like I should.

I definitely appreciate the responses. I'm thinking its been this way the last year we've had them and I just noticed. Good reason to do another water change though.

I have another bullet that's almost identical and they both have a red tint to their eyes. The pic makes it look a lot redder than it really is.

Actually, this is a fancy comet goldfish. The abnormality is exactly what Russ stated. The red eyes is just coloring, as is the at the base of the fins. I've never heard the term "bullet" used in reference to a goldfish or koi!/?

Thank you Koiman! I just can't find this deformity when doing research, so it must be pretty uncommon.

You're absolutely right. It's comet... not bullet. I'm getting my comic book forum conversations confused with my koi forum conversations.

I'm mostly a lurker here, but I thought I would chime in on this subject.

I have a couple of goldfish that were hatched in my pond that lack gill plates. They were that way from day one, as far as I can tell.

I read that at one time goldfish were intentionally bred for that characteristic. I don't know if that is true or not, and why someone would do that, I have no idea. They are pretty bizarre looking. They have normal looking gills, and since they are exposed, they are easy to see. The fish seem very healthy. They are now 2 years old and are growing normally.
