Yeah, I did separate the 1 large one. I figure the other ones that are nearing 3/4 of an inch could only fit the smallest of dry in their mouths, which is ok with me.

Right now I'm feeding crumbled flake. Should I switch to crumbled pellets you think? The protein percentage on my pellets is less than the flakes...

Probably the higher protein % would be better at this stage. If you want to speed growth more and don't mind the process of making it, the high protein seafood paste helps a lot. For example, I mentioned one blend in my showa thread, "... sort of following Wombat's method. This particular blend is 33% tuna, 22% sardines, 15% mackeral, 15% salmon, and 15% pumpkin. So 85% seafood." My wife gave me my own blender just for this purpose . English peas or any other soft peas will work in place of canned pumpkin. Other canned seafood such as herring, shrimp, prawns, or clams can substitute for the seafood in the example. And it's okay if you mix in more veggies and only have say 70% seafood. I've seen some here just make it 100% seafood, which I guess is okay if they have other lower protein foods as well.

I think I am ready to cull. I can see what look like kohaku and sanke on some of the larger fish. Then I have yellow and white fry.

I'm thinking of keeping about 10 yellow and 10 white. Then about 40 kohaku (if i can find that many, they are hard to spot on the smaller ones) and 40 darker fish (sanke or asagi or whatever else they might be).

At this point and with such a small number I would just increase the amount of protein in their diet and another month you will be able to see the colors come up that will help you during your culling process, but two of the did catch my eye

I'm thinking it's about time to narrow it down to my top 10... Hoping to do so this weekend! :-)

I figured that before I post another thread for this years spawn, I would update my one from last year... In the end, I kept far too many fish for the summer and growth was terrible. I should have known better, but hopefully I have learned.

At the end of the summer, my largest fish were only 2.5 inches, with the majority 1 to 1.5 inches. I gave away all but 20 at the beginning of October and last weekend selected my last 5 below.

Below here are most of the ones I saved from the fall, about a month ago. There were some promising ones, but they were small or had weird imperfections, such as these dark lines running down the ridge of their back starting just behind their heads. Not sure if anyone has ever seen that or knows if it goes away.

Regardless, plan is to keep far fewer fish and hopefully grow them much faster this year!

I hear ya. I kept many for a good while last year to learn from how they developed, but it was at the cost of size as many were only 3" by winter. Thanks for posting and best wishes for this time around.

I feel I will be (knowingly) making the same mistake this year with my first spawn. It is so tempting to keep as many as I can so I have better chances of getting 'keepers' with good patterns, conformation, etc... but at the cost of minimal growth in their first year. Oh well.... lol

I know they're not puppies, but I cannot cull. I just cannot. I know I've said this before but thank John Clark for taking every single fish I don't want. He is a little tired of blue shusui, though, and i have over 700 of them, same reason as yours, Hammatron. Waiting for the elusive ki to appear or disappear on those fish who are now averaging 14" because I feed them 3x a day and have screened out the worst predators.

interesting, tho, Matt. For all the partying in the three ponds, I see no fry.
      Super relieved!
I'm sure John will come over with a white pail, scoop up some water in the reeds and see a ton of them. but i see NONE.

I'm on the same page, can't "traditionally" cull. My "cull" will just be taking ones that I'm not a big fan of and giving them to a friend who has a large natural pond on his property.
