      My First Spawn

I know it's a little early to celebrate, but I thought it was never going to happen. Previous years my fish never spawned, and I actually purposely bought spawning mops this year hoping to encourage some action. Well, the action did not happen, as the water shot through the 50s, 60s, and 70s. It wasn't until my pond reached 82 degrees! I had fallen behind on string algae so the spawn was everywhere, but I managed to pull out a ton of eggs and put them in a 10 foot kiddie pool with about 14 inches of water and 2 sponge filters.

Today at 36 hours I scoped some eggs and found that almost all in my sample are viable. Posted a little video of the baby wiggling. Guessing they will hatch fast at 82 degrees!

They will probably hatch in 4 days. Are you prepared to feed them when they are ready?

Congratulations on the hatching. And thanks for the 36 hours at 82 F data point. I had seen 60 hours with water in the mid 70's was typical, and have seen cold weather hatchings not start until over 120 hours. This might be a good test of whether high temps at spawning has any negative impacts on fry. Please keep us posted on developments.

It may just be my computer, but for the two videos, all I see is a black rectangle on the screen with nothing to click on. What variety are the parents?

Correction: After seeing the video, I see that they had not hatched yet. The wiggling fry you mentioned was still in the egg seen in a microscope. Thanks for that camera shot.

I already do BBS daily for my tropical fish and I have a 110 gallon tub where I do my summer daphnis cultures. I'm more worried about what to do with 10k fry if all these eggs actually hatch. Wondering if I should set up a 15 foot intex, as my plan for them now is just an empty 500g pond..

Even with lots of space you need an idea of what you are looking to keep and raise and heavy culling is required. With less space the heavier the culling will need to be. Can you put up pictures of who the female was and which males participated? If you would like to add a select few to your main pond what patern and color type are you interested in. Some may show deformities they get culled. Later some might look small and week. Beyond that skin quality might be top of the list in what to keep.

Not sure why video is not working, but here is the link to the youtube videos:
      Eggs @ 36 Hours: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3cQc3Fu2Tg
      Fish: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bf_bkcCWXs

And here is a microscope update at 60 Hours: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUiB2hnYDsE
Notice that in some of the eggs, the eyes are starting to darken up. I was surprised that the whitish eyes all appear alive. About 10-20 percent of the eggs have definitely fungused though.

No recent pictures, all from last April, but here are the fish I think spawned. There are 3 other smaller fish less than 2 years old that I don't think contributed, but who knows, an ochiba, ogon and platinum ogon. I didn't include those.

This is a showa from Russell Peters as a tosai in 2016.

One of the newer 4 fish that might have spawned is this one, doitsu ochiba, from Russell Peters, only 2 years old, but was swollen with eggs... This photo is actually from russell when I purchased it last spring.

Nice looking fish. I'm sure you'll have some "beauties" from the spawn.

TY, hoping some kohaku, sanke or ogon will pop up. Not sure how my two doitsu will factor into the equation. Time will tell, but for now... 72 hour update... Fry.

I had placed 1 clump of algae in a 10 gallon just so I could observe. This tank has maintained a warmer temperature of 78 degrees in my basement fishroom and the eggs have hatched in only 3 days. Kiddie pool has dropped to 70 with the cool nights and none have hatched there yet.

Sorry for the poor quality photo, but I can see several hundred fry covering all sides of the aquarium.... exciting!

After only 36 hours, the fry have taken flight and are eating, at least the ones in the tank are.. I think they are a full day ahead of the fry in the kiddie pool.

Looks like you've got a lot of them, and I bet there are far more in your kiddie pool. Best of luck with them!

Besides the hi utsuri and the doitsu ochiba, do you know which ones, if any, of the others are female? Also, do you know which of the females laid their eggs? Usually they don't all lay there eggs unless the spawning happens multiple days in a row. Usually only one or two will lay their eggs in the morning and then they take a break until the next morning. You may be able to tell by which ones suddenly look skinny.

Of the young ones that you mentioned, if they were males more than a year old, they probably contributed. I've seen 9" one-year-old males in flock spawns with adult koi. I've also seen them get thrown over the waterfall down to the pond below.

Your probably right about the them not all laying at once. They spawned again on thursday... I came home to the pond half covered in foam.

I really don't know about which ones are female besides those two. My only other guess based on body shape is my kohaku, but I might just be mistaking fat for swollen with eggs :-) Perhaps i will catch, measure and photo them tomorrow and attempt to vent sex them?

As for my fry, your right... I have a lot. Too many actually. Not sure what to do since i don't have the space to raise this many even for a month, and I've scrapped the idea of doing a big intex pool.

For now, I'm setting up their 500 gallon pond. I'll have a SG filter on it and fill it with hyacinth. I think I should be able to handle 1000 fry for about a month before I start a second round of culling. I guess I'll choose those 1000 next weekend once they are a little more robust.

They fry I placed in an aquarium have quickly outgrown their 10 gallon, so I moved them to a 40g. They are quite an impressive site to watch.

Managed to net a few of the parents. I'm pretty sure the kohaku is a female. Here are the pics.

Currently my biggest issue is feeding the dry enough. Hatching the BBS is not sufficient as my hatchery is really only large enough for about a teaspoon worth of eggs a day. The fry in my tank devour this entire amount in 5 minutes. This leaves me with 2 other meals of which i am currently using microworms and flake food. Unfortunately their appetite for dried foods is minimal, so i am worried about overall growth rate. Hoping that they soon develop more of a taste for it. My other option is to start hatching BBS in a much larger vessel, but I don't have any that are appropriately shaped and don't want to waste half the eggs due to settling.

Lastly, the dry being raised outdoors have strange white bellies. Not sure if this is belies full of infusoria, or if they have some sort of infection. Here is a picture.

Active dry yeast can be helpful for food when fry are tiny. I wonder if that belly is just a little left over yoke sack that will be used up in a day or two.

I thought I knew what tobies were, but then all of a sudden when I discovered a single fish over an inch, I knew. Most of the fish are between 1/2 and 3/4 of an inch. The fish kept indoors have lagged behind, and I have begun releasing them. They are mostly half an inch or less. Excited to see some fish starting to show some patterns.

Sure looks like you have good numbers. It is of course best to separate the tobi from the rest of the swarm, and watch for new tobi emerging. Ample high protein food can help curb the development of tobi, if your filter can handle the load of the feeding.
