When the egg is being laid, it has to be flexible, since the egg may roll around in the nest until it settles into a position. Once it settles in, the embryo then becomes fixed in a certain position. This is why some scientists mark eggs with a magic marker so that they keep the orientation the same as in the nest.

When I was a teenager, I walked to school and had to walk by a pond that had a large population of snappers and painted turtles. At nesting time, they would come out and lay their eggs, and sometimes I would watch and wait until they were finished. I'd bring the eggs home, and put them in the dirt next to the house. Most hatched, but I typically got them within the first day, and didn't know about the embryo position issue at the time.
I do remember there was very high predation of the eggs at the pond, as many nests were discovered by skunks or raccoons, and I'd see all the broken shells scattered about on my morning school trip.
Thanks, Steve for the big relief!
I read about the marking pen, but I'd already moved the eggs.
I got them into tupperware within 3 hours and carefully reburied correct side up within 14 hours.
They're inside netted pond, no mammal predators, no crows. I did see a frog sitting on the nest yesterday.
thanks for sharing the walk to school.

      Angry I blame max

I was repotting some plants and dug up some lizard eggs :ugh:
I buried them in the flower bed...hopefully not upside down.
I think they are skink eggs because two jumped out of the pot while I was digging

Okay, if my calculations are correct the hatch date should be around September 1. We will anxiously await the arrival of the hatchlings, unless you placed them in the hole which leads under the pond to the underworld! From pink skunks to bird shelters to turtle mama you are a fun friend!

Sept. 1 is the due date, and now have expanded Turtle Park.

Rain, I like the direction you're going in. Planting eggs! And a new trend is born.

Frank, thanks for the due date on the prospective turtle hatch. I'd forgotten to put down the special day, but the eggs were properly buried, high side of the pond, inside the netting, three feet from the water. I think if Mom Turtle knew, she'd approve.

Below, another mama painted turtle outside the net, digging hole with a fly on her back. She was recaptured and returned before she did her job of putting her eggs in harm's way.

      But wait.
      There's more.

The pond's population of painted turtles have very little margin inside the nets to lay eggs or even to sun themselves properly. A couple of weeks ago, a huge storm blew down a locust tree and presented an opportunity to expand Turtle World for the better.

Below, Fred and Sean install the new sunning log. Later, we moved it so it got more sun. Various pond residents have enjoyed the log, and last, see turtles sunning, just snapped.

We're working now on a egg-laying box and will post soon.

if you want to hatch turtle eggs . Get a big coffee can with the plastic snap on lid, paper towels or paper napkins. Get eggs (keep them the same angle you found them . Dampen towels (dampen not soak them). layer the eggs between the moist paper. Shredded news paper works also. Poke holes in lid for air. put lid on and put someplace safe and warm not hot. Eggs need to be moist the whole time. Moist not wet. Take lid off to check on them ,to remoisten and to get fresh air in. I kept mine under my bed . My Mom loved me. We had box turtles running out of our ears when I was a kid.

Thanks for the advice and the entertainment.
I already planted them a couple inches down, about two feet from the waters' edge and i think the rain and the moist area around the pond should do the trick, but at this stage, I don't think it's safe to mess with them, again. If they hatch, I'll post their baby pix.
Your mom. What a cool woman.

Max is still working on computer issues to access the forum... so I'm just relaying
      her response for her:

as far as I could tell there was no hatch. I may have to a little bit of digging next spring, see what I can learn.

      Hi, DarkStar,
In brief. Painted Turtle was laying eggs at like 7:00 p.m. The soil was clay and in a path and she didn't get them in very deep,, couple of inches. I called Heather who helps me for a couple of hours a week, is a fresh water biologist so i called her. She said they will be eaten in the morning. So at nine p.m, i took the car into the field, dug up the eggs very carefully with a spoon by headlights, put them in a little tupperware thingy, covered it with peaty soil, kept the whole thing on screened-in porch overnight. by next morning, after posting here, i learned Do Not Disturb the Eggs. Little turtle embryos could drown! Well, they were only a couple hours old when I moved them and didn't think the embryos could've drowned by then, so i found a place inside the netting of the lower pond where no quadrupeds or snakes or crows or anything could get them and carefully carefully laying them in same position relative to how they were placed in tupperware, i re-buried them. Supposed to hatch in September. I never saw disturbed soil and I kept hands off. So - I could have misplaced the spot, or the eggs were annoyed or i do not know. you are now up to date. Come spring, I may take a little spade to the area and see what happened. Any stillborn little turtles? or no trace? if they hatched and went directly into the pond I may not have noticed. Place yer bets, ladies and gentlemen.

Cindy, are you the same girl who said "I gotta get home and feed the 'possums and raccoons, and foxes and cougars and vampire bats?" Hmmmmm?
You woulda done same. "Amazing" woulda been a train of little turtles.
      However.
Have plans for a little turtle laying section inside the pond, a habitat of sorts. John Clark is encouraging me in this. PLUS, i have that new pond that took three separate bulldozer folk to dig and Heather talked me into not netting it and leave it a wildlife pond.
More on this next year, but I'm calling it "Turtle Park."
So maybe the turtles will take a hint!

Max, have you ever looked into funding for your place and the wildlife part? Natural Resources Conservation has WHIP Wildlife habitat incentive programs. Register your land with Farm Services Agency in your area, get a farm number and see what's available.

I'm getting ready to take over our County Ag Incentive Program, we get 85,000 for land owner projects and more in 6 months. I'm applying for seeds for the pollinator plants. CAIP even includes bees

Wow. No, Cindy. I didn't know a thing about this. I'll check into it. I bought about 80lbs of wildflower seeds last fall. well, if it's worth doing, it's worth doing fast! We have a protected bog turtle in this area "the great swamp." i have never seen one, but i think there's some kind of protection for them.
      I'll let you know.
