      Thinking about buying this Kohaku

I was at a dealer today who offered me a 2 year old Kohaku. I believe it's likely male, but it seems to have a robust body and reasonably-good beni and shiroji. He is roughly 18" long.

The asking price is C$500 which equates to $385 US dollars. Dealer claims this is a Sakai fish.

I would appreciate your feedback on this fish, and my apologies for the quality of the photos as he is a frisky fellow (he refused to say "cheese" as well!).

The skin looks very flat and lack-luster. I think the price is fair, but on the high side of fair. Also, its mouth i too angular. I dont think this fish is ever going to look better than it does now. If you like it, than buy it. Its not a bad fish, I just dont think it will hold up well as it ages.

My sakai sanke had nice Beni at first but as said the skin was flat and lacked luster or sheen. My shirogi continued to get worse and I sold it for $80 at 22 inches..I paid 5 times that for it

Does your back half match your front half?

I'm far from being experienced at buying or judging koi, but I thought I'd weigh in here to learn. What is striking to me is it's disproportionately small mouth. He will find it hard to compete for food and thus relative growth will be disappointing. While you are there you can ask the dealer to feed the bunch and see how he competes for food.

What? $80bucks for a 22" sakai? That's an awesome fish! I can totally fatten him up and make it look nice.

It was a messy fish. I got $150 for my tancho goshiki.

I think it might be a camera trick and/or refraction from the water combined with the pattern. I inspected his mouth previously and it seemed normal to me, but I'll have a closer look the next time I am in.

You need to be the judge of the skin quality in person, photos can be deceptive and netting to bowl the fish can stress them a little which can make the shashi appear a little dull. The Kiwa is a little messy but not bad enough to dissuade at this age. If you were interestd in a show fish then beni running all the way to the tail fin could be a demerit.

I am curious, did you decide to buy it? I think, for the price, it would be worth giving it a try. The dealer is not selling something it is not and, yes, there are inexpensive Sakai Koi. I am sorry that your thread became a talking point for someone else's Koi sales.
people like to vehemently defend their purchases and find it incredulous that anything could be better

For now I have passed on this koi, but I said I'd come back in a few weeks to see if he has dropped the price. I think I am willing to take the risk of no improvement in this koi at about 30% less than the current ask.

I agree with Russ and think this fish is very much worth the try at the price. You may wait a long time finding another of this quality and size for a better price. Two issues I mentioned in my earlier post are very minor
(sashi and tail stop). Overall this is a beautiful fish.

I don’t know what kind of quality is usually available in Ontario, but this fish is exceptional compared to what I can find in BC, and I would not hesitate at that price ... can you tell me more about the type of fish your dealer is bringing in?

In my opinion I think there is a bit too much beni in front? Maybe there should be a bit of white on the shoulder area, but that's just me. If you like it then go for it

At $385 US dollars the focus should be on Body, Skin, and Beni quality... Pattern is a distant 4th.
