      New fish flashing in q-tank

      Hello Koiphen,

Is it normal for new fish to flashing?

I ordered 8 fingerling koi fish online. They are 5-7 inches long. Within couple hours in quarantine tank after delivered, at least 2 of them are started flashing.

The q-tank is 50 gallon. It is in the basement and water temp is consistent at 70 degree. It has a 1000 gph submersible pump to a 5 gallon s&g filter. It also has a small aeration stone.

Water is from main pond which has 1 fish in it. Water quality is good before adding fish. After about 10 hours of adding fish, I test water again and everything still look good except ammonia rise from 0 to .25. I didn't feed the fish yet. I added 1 pound of solar water softener salt so far.

Is there any thing I can do before it get worst?

      Thank you all

      Do a shotgun treatment
3 days of Proform C or equivalent products then 2 rounds of Fluke M
      https://www.koiphen.com/forums/showth...-and-parasites
You can choose to wait and watch but I alway treat all my new addition

Isn’t that pump too powerful? Watch it might overflow the barrel

      @OCkoiFan

I don't have Profom C and Fluke-M on hand. I ordered them already, should be here next week. Thank you for your input.

Test the KH and pH. Could be pH issues that are causing flashing.

I would also advise making sure you are using an ammonia binding product.

I have the API test kit and it doesn't have the KH test in it. I will look for it at my local pet store. Can somebody list some ammonia binding product brand name. I search and come up with only Seachem AmGuard. This may not available locally.

Some other ammonia binders are Prime (liquid) and Safe (powder). Same stuff but my
      local store only carries Prime.
If they don't have a KH test kit, Billy can set you up:

You stated that these koi are ordered online and I doubt that they are free of parasites
So I said you can treat or watch and wait

You might be okay since they are fingerlings but I recommend more volume for the tank in future at least 150g to 300g prefers
Meantime learn and get your tests in range
      Ammo prefer close to 0ppm
      Nitrite prefer close to 0ppm
Nitrate acceptable range 1-40ppm (my opinion)
      KH (over 100 or 8drops)

I use prime seachem too powder version and cheap on amazon shipped 2 days with Prime account worth it

Good advice! I also use Seachem - I use the powder version called Safe. Expensive on the front end but lasts forever.

I would also highly recommend also purchasing the (inexpensive) Seachem Ammonia Alert Disk. You hang it in your QT tank and it will show the *harmful* ammonia level. When you use a binder, your API drop test kits will test false-positive for ammonia and it will make you crazy thinking the ammonia is never bound. lol

Seachem Prime and Safe both bind ammonia AND nitrites. You need to re-dose for the *full volume* of the system every 48 hours to re-bind, or when you see the alert disk indicate there is harmful ammonia present.

My experience is that it takes around 4-6 weeks for a new QT with bio to fully cycle so prep to do many water changes and maintenance until that happens.

So Proform-c is arrived. I'm doing the shotgun treatment as OCKoiFan recommended. It is on 3rd day of Proform-c now. I'll keep my eyes on the fish.

Thank you all for your inputs.
