      Mulch Dye

Never happened before. I mulched last week, using black mulch. Multiple inches of rain have fallen in the last couple days. No mulch in the pond but the black dye has leached and turned the water black. Could only see the fish 1/2 way down last night, or 18 inches. Pond is 2200 gallons. Drained 1/2 the pond last night and replaced water. Continued to rain all night. I have an Aquadyne filter 2.2 (for up to 8,000 gallon pond). This morning, I can see the bottom, still a little dark though. Fish seem to be doing fine, swimming around like normal. They are eating. Any thoughts?

Most colored mulches are dyed with harmless dyes, like iron oxide-based dyes for red or carbon-based dyes for black and dark brown.

Look for this on your bag of mulch. This means they probably avoided heavy metal treated woods or toxic dyes that could have leached into your pond water.

Thank you Nancy - Gray Cat. I called the bulk mulch nursery prior to reading your reply in attempt to get MSD sheet. He was going to call the distributor for me to obtain but said the product is registered and they use a carbon based processed. Probably charcoal. I'm confident all is well.

Issue was resolved. Mulch was a certified product using a carbon based color and not chemicals. My filter captured it as well as the backwash was quite dark. Pond and fish were never in danger.
