      backyard mutt fun time

The last couple years if I drop water lettuce or hyacinth in my pond I've had flock spawns and have saved and raised a few of the offspring. I got mostly ogons, but I did get one showa out of the mix. This year I decided to select a spawning pair and see what happens. I know my fish are only pet store quality. I do this purely for the fun of it. Figured why not share it here.
Momma is a gin rin kohaku and papa is an ochiba (I guess). The male actually turns all black when he's in the pond. He lightens up over winter and did slightly in the small pool I used for spawning. They were only in it for less than 24 hours and the (poor quality) photos were taken post spawn. Spawning took place 2 weeks ago, 5/24. Hatching started over Memorial Day. Fry are going on two weeks old.

Congratulations and thanks for posting this spawning success. You might get quite a variety of types from this interesting combination. Not a crossing most would have chosen, but it may provide a learning opportunity not often seen. Please keep us informed of the developments, and best of luck.

Thanks. As for the pairing: I pretty much just have ogons and specklegoi, and I knew what gender these two were from catching them in the act last year.
I had a male gin rin bekko that I really liked but it jumped out and I lost it about a year ago.

Pulled a couple confirmed tobi cannibals and suspects of size. Raising them in my garage and they don't get enough sunlight so the colors are really dull yet.

and one midget who got caught in the net. The average fry are somewhere between the size of the one in the top left and the next smallest.

Good size and bodies on those, though tobi. It's good that you separated them. I think feeding plenty of high protein helps keep tobi from developing as much. The reason is that the little ones grow better, and fewer of them are targets for the tobi wannabes. So the tobi don't grow as much and can't eat as many siblings.

Yep...my fry were spawned at the same time. Fed 50% powder and now the same in tiny pellets. I only have 8/9 but fun to see them grow. They already come
when I say "Come on babies" I disposed of about a million eggs.

I have maybe a couple hundred fry. I spotted this one that's kinda crazy looking. The tail tube is all black and the head/body are yellowish-white. I tried to grab my phone for a quick pic but it escaped before I could.

Some quick pictures. I moved them out of my garage yesterday to a small upper section of my pond. Many escaped and I recovered almost all of them then (hopefully) fixed their exit point.

Here's a tobi and that kuchibeni one from earlier with other mid-size fry.

Wow! That's a lot of babies. Looks like you got quite a few Ochiba. One of my favorites as you can see from my Avatar
      Good Luck with them.

And some close ups. Got a lot of tails offset to one side, and smushed faces. I didn't do any culling aside from zig-zag spines picked out here and there.

Nice work! And thanks for the update pics. Having come from a kohaku and an ochiba, I would have expected more to look like a mix of the two. But instead, most look like they came from either one or the other. Looks like you have lots of soragoi, cha, and a few sanke as well. Please keep us posted in the coming months as they develop further.

Thanks, and yeah I was expecting to see a bunch of ugly looking mutts and hoping to get a GR chagoi or ochiba. But like you said, it's basically split. That bekko/utsuri/mutt is the only one like it in the whole bunch.
I only ended up with the one genuine tobi and I had left it in with the rest for the longest time. I'm sure it took out a good number of other fry. If I had to guess I'd say I'm down to less than half of what hatched with no population management on my part.

Decided to just drop them in the pond last fall and let them be. I crush some food when I feed normally, otherwise they haven't been getting any special care. Numbers are way reduced. I also found a big bull frog this spring that I suspect managed to hibernate in my pond. Then I saw another one or two show up temporarily when it first started warming up. Not sure if they weren't eating some of the fingerlings.
Here are a couple shots of ones that I was able to chase down with a net. This is maybe 1/3 of what's left and a sample of the size range. I have one that's not here and is probably 6-7" and a few more 4"+ but most of them are still small like these.
The chagoi-ish ones following the male's genetics are all basically black and impossible to catch at this size. Thought I had some metallic chagoi/ochiba before, but sadly no longer see any.

It's funny because I do everything in my power to prevent spawning/flock spawns. Room and board is expensive in my pond. Lol honestly just waiting to get rid of some mutts to replace um with gosanke and maybe a beni kumonryu.

Would you consider a few of those gin rin shiros? I Need a shiro as well. I wish I wouldn't of bought so many koi when I originally started this hobby cause it's hard to rehome koi here in Ohio. Especially to a good home and not to become fish food for bass and the like .

I don't really know if they are shiro utsuri. I suppose they could be hageshiro, hajiro or matsuwabake. Those in particular seem to be undergoing rather dramatic color change. I enjoy raising the little ones, but yeah I now have a serious stocking issue. My water is still doing fine for now, but I'll be looking to give away as many as I can before long.

Thanks for the update. If space will allow, you may want to be extra patient with the ones with sumi, as black tends to come and go and reshape in the early months.

For those who need to re-home koi, one option is to ask at places that sell inexpensive koi, such as garden centers, landscape centers, or aquarium shops.
