Correct me if I'm wrong but I was always taught showa are born black and sanke were born white... I'd think
the breeder would know if they were white or black when born, no? Or are the labels posted just based on pattern?

And just as a reminder that we're in the "... Less Serious Critique" forum.

It's a Sanke, look at the nature of the sumi. It's all topside and consolidated. Not every Sanke has sumi only in the places we think it should be for show. Some of the best Sanke I've seen (beni, sumi and skin quality) have had sumi located outside of the ideal. To me, it also has more the conformation of a Sanke.
It's a nice enough looking koi. The sumi will consolidate more over time. I'd be surprised if all we see as underlying actually emerges.

also the "Consolidation" of the Sumi? ...in the last photo it has broader patches of sumi than in any other. The sumi is coming and going..it isn't "consolidating". it is acting like Showa sumi.

Pattern is cool, just that it seems like you can see its internal organs. If it is fine with you then perfect.

as a pond grade fish it is near the top in pattern and interest. It is a bit too heavy, but it looks happy...except it wants to get back to its pond.

It's a young fish and the amount of sumi on the head will not all be there as it matures. I guess we'll wait and see. I've seen plenty of Sanke with a good amount of sumi on the head. There's even a common saying amongst Japanese breeders that a Sanke with Sumi on the gill plate will have strong sumi. It's not ideal in a show koi but sometimes you see a Sanke with Sumi outside of the ideal location do well in even the biggest shows. The quality overrides what is considered a demerit.

An example of a very nice koi with sumi on the head is this one:

      http://www.koiphen.com/forums/showth...out-this-Sanke

There is absolutely no doubt that the linked koi is a Sanke but I'm sure there are some that would argue it based on the sumi on the head.

Btw, here is another Sanke that has a similar sumi pattern on the body. It's a very nice koi although it generated the usual Sanke or Showa discussion. It was posted years ago here on KP.

Nice pattern. Just me, but I prefer sanke like this with what many would consider "too much sumi". I also like the thickness of this koi, though I wonder if it may get a bit too porky down the line. Time will tell.

Sounds like we have a bit a of a two-part philosophical question on "sanke or showa":

      (1) Are they sanke or showa based upon what they look line at two weeks old (dark or light, which only the breeder would know) or are they sanke or showa based upon what they look like when they are older?

      (2) If it is what they look like when they are older, then what are the deciding factors?
      (a) Sumi on the head?
      (b) The amount of sumi?
      (c) The layout/pattern of the sumi?
      (d) Some combination of the above?

I don't know how it is decided or if there is even any consensus on it.

This one has the sumi on the head and the large amount of sumi that are both more common among showa. But the layout of the sumi looks more like sanke to me. The sumi is not in bands that go down low wrapping around the fish. I wish I could have seen the parents of this fish.
