These are the ones I am keeping in the 1800 gallon pond for now. They are 130 days old. Despite a significant percentage of deformities, the numbers were good enough to get a few decent showa prospects and a couple of shiro utsuri. I don't see any impressive kohaku patterns, though I hope a couple will end up looking good in the pond. There are also several ginrin orange muji. Most of these are in the 2" - 3.5" range. So there is still a long way to grow.

Sorry for the poor lighting. To catch them, I really need to net them in the dark. I did it in the early morning so there would be some daylight for the photos after I was done, although the sun was still low in the sky. Besides these, there are a few more in the 350 gallon tub that are real longshots.

Here are a few individuals. You can tell how little that smallest first showa is by the comparative size of that snail.

Matt, In picture 6 from top to bottom, the small one near the middle, I see a ginrin kohaku with a decent odome and pattern, but I am not sure if that is the glare or if there really is a small white space before the tail? The pattern look similar to the second picture below it. However, if that's the same koi there is no odome (The line between the last color and shiroji in the tail section).

I see some decent shiro utsuri. The main thing with shiro utsuri is black and white with no red color. The showa is still hard to tell, they keep changing.

Thanks Kevin, Roger, and Delbert. Most of the shiro utsuri I've raised in the past have developed a few specks of orange, but not all. I like the look of the chunky one that I posted the individual photo of. The showa are more numerous. So maybe a couple of those will work out.

I am not sure if this is the kohaku you were referring to, as it is not ginrin. To me, this one does not seem to have the white area near the tail, though in certain photos, it gleams a little and might look that way.

Matt, that's the one. If it doesn't have a desired odome, the saddle won't balance. Its kind of frustrating when we don't get one or two perfect patterns out of thousands.

      Hi, Matt,
to my untrained eye for anything not shusui, the group of them look healthy and an improvement over last years batch. I hope you are favorably surprised when they mature a little more. Pulling for you over here in the Hudson Valley.

Thanks. The same koi is in the photo just before that one, facing the opposite direction, but not as close up. Here is another shot that shows the orange. I hope underlying sumi will fill in on that right side that is not showing much.

Thanks Delbert. Kind of the opposite of the one I mentioned above. This one needs some underlying sumi to emerge on the left side. From what I've seen in the past few spawns, it is really hard (for me at least) to tell what that sumi is going to do. It can change a lot, for better or worse.

Yep, I figured it was a long shot, getting a nice kohaku from a showa spawn, especially when the female lacks a well defines hi pattern. [She was selected for the black, white, and the body. Plus my only other big female showa is Doitsu and yields too many of fry with bad scales.] In my first 3 showa spawns, I primarily just raised the darker fry. This time around, I decide to test it out, especially since over 90% were light colored fry. Looks like there is not going to be a kohaku star in the bunch. Maybe one will be a decent pond pet and some of the darker ones will develop well. At least that's the hope.

Matt, I was wondering what are the blood line of the parents? The Tancho Showa has potential. I wonder how it will turn out.

In Kokugyo Vol.1, Introduction to Nishikigoi, Mamoru Kodama pointed out, "In comparison to other Tancho varieties, Tancho Showa is the most valuable and most expensive.Tancho Showa is the king of Tancho."

I just had a Kindai Showa epiphany, after Kobayashi Showa won the first grand champion for the Showa variety, Mr. Mano Dainichi developed a new (Kindai) Showa grand champion which shook the Nishikigoi world. Kindai Showa are characterized by the separation of HI (red) and sumi (black); Kokugyo Vol. 1.

Well I only have partial info on that, not a complete picture.

I bought the female showa, from a friend. He said it was Omosako. He had bought it as an utsuri (before some orange showed up) from Kevin Pham of Genki Koi.
The male ginrin orange showa came from another friend. He was unsure of the breeder, but said he got it from Andy Mu (Andrew's Koi International).
I got the male red showa from a Kodama auction. They said it came from Niigata prefecture, but they were uncertain which breeder.

Growing season here is winding down. At noon today, the water in the little pond was 55 F. Since the water cooled off about 3 weeks ago, the little ones have not been eating nearly as much.

Matt, you might get some unblemished shiro utsuri from the Omosako blood line, its been refined, so it can't be counted out. Looking good so far.

Well they made it through the winter okay. Not a lot new to report, but here is an update after 5 months. I covered their 1800 gallon pond with a double layer of plastic sheeting until I took that off a week ago. There was a lot of string algae under there, and I dipped a some of it out.

With no feeding for months, they have not grown much at all. Most are still 2" - 3.5", with a few smaller and one 7.5". There are around 100, ~45% showa/utsuri, ~40% kohaku, plus a few ginrin aka muji.

In the last two days warmer temps have brought the water up to near 50 F. So I put a little of the seafood paste out on the hanging frisbees, not really expecting any nibblers at these temps. But it was a hit. They are eating a little of it, which I suspect will pick up as the water slowly warms.

I'm not sure if I will do a new spawn this year. This group still has a long way to grow. Due to the large number of fry, only light culling early on, and cooler than normal summer, this group did not grow as much in their first year as most previous spawns. I'm considering just taking it easy and watching these grow out this year. We'll see.
