      Memorial Day Blooms

Though generally marked with barbecues and outdoor family fun....it is important to remember the solemnity of the day, even during the midst of festivity.

Some photos of my plants I took today to honor those that gave their lives in service to their country. As insufficient as it sounds, I thank them for their sacrifice and hope the families find solace in the celebration of the day.

Beautiful blooms to honor those that gave their lives in service to their country.

What is the name of the first plant? Looks large next to your wife.

The first plant is a favorite. It is a Crinum from Madagascar; (C. hardyi ) for me it as cold tolerant as the native C. americanum, but much larger in size and flower and blooms throughout the summer. The flowers open during the evening, so hopefully I can get a picture in the AM. That and the plant in the second picture ...a hymenocallis ( spider lily ) from the Caribbean are two of my favorites. I'm guessing it may be their tropical origins, but both have more showy flowers and a much longer bloom time than their native cousins.

Thanks Matt. The Crinum bloomed today. It really does make an impressive specimen plant.

I can see why Crinum is a favorite of yours. Very nice.
