      There are many in the aquarium hobby who believe the same thing and I can see the point. For me, it really depends. If the water gets really nasty I have to change it.

      Regarding water changes during cycling, why don't people just buy a bag of ammonium sulfate and just do a fishless cycle on the ponds? No need to water change that until you add fish.

      I think some people do what they have experience doing. Dan feels comfortable doing it his way.

      ETA, I have no intention of starting an argument. It's just that fishless cycling is very easy and clearly can't stress fish. I just find it odd that a group that spends a lot of money on the latest and greatest filtration still cycle like it was 50 years ago. It would only take about 10oz of ammonium sulfate to bring 2800 gallons to 4ppm NH3.
