Dan sent me a video today showing progress.

      Day 30, no UV

Dan says; "This video shows the pond July 5. 30 days with fish, 34 with water. At 14 days you couldn’t see the pectorals due to algae. Today you can clearly see the tail of a 16” fish pointing straight down while feeding. Almost 20” clarity. No water changes, no chemicals and no UV. Just a shower using J-mat top tier, Rio Ceramic Media next two tiers and feather rock with coral rubble in the bottom tier. Pump is a Mo-Ming 20,000 liter submersible with no mechanical filtration. I will soon change out to a W. Lim 1/3 hp and an Advantage 10 bead filter to feed the shower."

Day 38, cycling a temporary shower filter with cheap, high performance China submersible pump.
Temporary setup, no mechanical, no water changes, no UV, with shade cover.

Correction: The stainless steel shower filter is a new filter for this pond and eventually will be moved to behind the pond.

What happened to the other shower and media?

Why no water changes in over a month?

He thinks water changes are detrimental to the media cycling?

Only 5 fish. I will ask.

I do know on Dan's other two smaller, heavy stocked ponds... he does frequent water changes.

      Dan says;

      1. I have not done water changes because my fish load is extremely low and I don’t want to disrupt the bacteria and cycle. I believe excessive fresh water would suppress the bacteria. I am adding fresh water to replace evaporation. I will begin small water changes at two to three months.

      2. The Fiberglass shower is set up on my 400 gallon quarantine tank. I set this tank up with extreme filtration because I was going to take a huge fish load to help Ricshaw after his house burned in the Thomas fire. Fortunately another friend was able to offer a much larger pond for his fish. I’m now using it to grow out 20 tosai. Fiberglass shower top tier 1-plastic bioballs, tier 2- J-mat and 1 1/2 cubic feet RIO Ceramic Media, tier 3- J-mat and 1 1/2 cubic feet Rio Ceramic Media, bottom tier feather rock.

      3. I acquired the SS filter for the new pond. Top tier 1- J-mat, tier 2- J- mat and 1 1/2 cubic feet RIO Ceramic Media, tier 3- J-mat and 1 1/2 cubic feet RIO Ceramic Media, tier 4 bottom- feather rock and coral rubble ( for buffering).

Both systems are being run with one 20,000 (5200 gph) liter submersible pump. I figure I’m getting around 2600 to 3000 gph at 5 foot head. Neither system has a pre filter, I’m planning a pre filter for both.

      Richard thanks for sharing.
Do you have any current and previous water parameters including nitrates ph kh?
What is the goal for this pond?

      I will ask the goals.

      I got this message yesterday:

"Day 39. I can see the screws on the drain at 4’1” and they are Phillips. This effect happened on my other new pond, the 400 gallon quarantine tank, but I was not monitoring as closely. Pea green water for two to three weeks, to off color tea brown for a week or so, to amazingly clear; the brown to clear is surprisingly quick, just days. On the little 400 gallon pond with the fiberglass shower the brown to clear seemed to happen overnight. Again, no UV or chemicals. I did add the residue from cleaning my existing pond filter to the new pond. I’ve been told the green is single cell algae and the brown is single cell protozoa. Shower filters are the best!"

      I got a text back:

"Just to enjoy my fish like all the other koi keepers. Hope to grow them and keep them healthy."

I might add that Dan has a nice collection of quality Koi.

Dan reports that he has had several spawning and/or spawning attempts in the new fiberglass pond.

It seems when he moves fish to the pond to cycle the new filter, they want to spawn. He has had to take more than one female out of the pond.
