      Any Potential w/ These 2 Sanke's??

I'm new to the hobby with lots to learn from the koi experts in this forum. I would like to know what you guys think of these 2 sanke's. These fishes are not mine but I would like to learn how to differentiate between a quality koi vs pond grade based on conformation, skin, color, pattern. I've read a lot of critiques regarding the tail tube bone structure. How to tell a strong tail tube vs a weak one?

Also, these 2 are identified by the dealer as sanke's; however, with the sumi on their fins, wouldn't these be showa's instead?

These are a higher level of Pond Grade Sanke. There is not really much to get excited about with them.
people like to vehemently defend their purchases and find it incredulous that anything could be better

Black rays on sanke’s pec fins call tejima
And Showa call “motoguro” we always joke that a buff guy with tattoo on his arms looks better
Compare again with a Showa and you can see they totally different types of black or sumi

Go into this thread and you can see the different in big/small tailtube from my 2 koi https://www.koiphen.com/forums/showth...e+illustration
It’s kinda hard to tell when they are little but try to pick the thicker tailtube section before the tail start
Stronger tail bone swim faster and to the food
      Good luck

Thanks Peter but just to pick your brain a bit, what makes you assess them that way? Is there something wrong with the body conformation? Beni & Sumi not strong enough? Like I mentioned in my original post, I'm trying to learn how to pick a quality fish.

Thanks for the link reference to the tail tube comparison. That helps and makes perfect sense that a fish with strong tail will get to the food much faster so they'll grow bigger than others. What's your opinion on these 2 sanke's? Would you pick them for grow out? Why or why not?

The sumi quality on both of these koi is not that good. It should look lustrous and not cloudy or smoky.
The skin on the one on the left is slightly better but not of higher quality.
The koi on the left looks quite finished in the beni department which is not good for enjoying the koi for that long. This is potentially exhibited by the separation of the sumi from the base of the fin. The overall appearance of these combined leads me to the more finished conclusion.
The second koi has very poor conformation in the back half and there is little luster or sheen in the skin.
If you are participating in a grow out competition, you would be well served by buying the best conformation you can find in the bunch.

You asked Russell about tail tube conformation and since he is traveling in Japan currently doing business, I thought I would show you three pics I've cropped of tosai with better tail conformation.

Thanks Marilyn for your thorough assessment. Now seeing different examples of tail tubes from OCkoiFan's and your pics, is the poor conformation of the 2nd koi due to a thin tail tube? I've also read to look for a big head and broad shoulders since they would be proportionate with the body once it's filled out. That seems to be present with the 2nd koi. Is that correct?

Just to be clear, both koi exhibit qualities less desirable in the conformation department. It's a little less visible on the first koi because the body is shorter. It's easier to mistake better potential bulk on a shorter bodied koi because everything is compacted. It remains a shorter body, though.
There is nothing wrong with aspiring to a wider head and broad shoulders but it is for naught if the back half of the koi does not support it. It likely will emphasize how the front has more bulk but the back half is quite lacking in it.

Mitch's assessment (OCkoiFan) is accurate. You can do better.

Yeah his name is Russell Peters lol

There is way more to it than just the tail tube so don't focus just on that. Body confirmation and many Other factors make or break a koi.
