ReDesign on Pump layout and it's now not pulling water

We recently had to replace the motor on my Sequence 1000 pump. We took the opportunity to elevate the pump above ground level as it periodically got dirt/moisture into the mechanism and would require servicing.

We hooked everything up. Now, I am getting no water pulled through the pump. We have tried using a hose to "push" water toward the pump....

Ive attached pictures & diagrams as to the layout. I do know if the updated design elevating the pump is the issue, or if it is a priming issue. Or worse.

      Any expertise would be appreciated.

You've created the textbook example of trapped air. You need a one-way valve on the inlet side if it's above-grade (above pond level), and a way to displace the air. That would be to have another pipe off the highest point so you can either bleed out the air, or more likely, drive out the air with a garden hose. Since the pump section is inverted and the drain is at the top, you can try that first - but it'll only work if the pump is below-grade.

      Thanks for your response!!

I guess there is a reason it is "textbook"! Darn, We attempted to pull water through the leaf basket, but clearly that didnt work. we also attempted to drive the air out with a garden hose, both through the Savio skimmer, and through the waterfall hose.
So, a one-way valve--should that be past the pump? to draw that air out and pull the water through?

Is it above or below the surface of the pond?

The Sequence 1000 is not a self priming pump.

Is this for a self-priming pump? Which this is not.....

Any suggestions on priming this type of pump?

The current install will not work. The pump must be flooded with water for it to begin moving water. The pump cannot pull water into itself like a person sucking a drink up a straw. You need to add 2 things for the pump to work in its current location. The first is a check valve that is below the water level of the pond. This will allow you to fill the pump with water without the water flowing back into the pond. The second is a priming pot this gives you something that you can open in order to add the water to fill the pump.

Thank you for your response! A couple of questions....

The check valve that is below the water level of the pond....is that before or after the pump? I also have a leaft basekt right before the pump. I just googled, and they call it a priming pot / leaf basket. Ive attached a picture of it. Is that the same thing? It is currently situated below the pump. Is that a design problem? or could I theoretically, open that that basket/pot and use a hose to add water?

      Check valve before the pump.

The priming pot needs to be slightly higher than the pump so that you can fill everything with water. As it is now the priming pot will be full but the pump is still dry since it is above the water level in the priming pot.

Looking at your setup again even with all this correctly installed your going to have problems since you mounted the output facing down the water is always going to drain from the pump before filling the pump. The output needs to be pointing up so that you can fully flood the pump chamber with water.

Hummm - this is going to be an adventure. If I understand your point, I need to rotate the pump and install a check valve.

I really appreciate your insight. Thank you for taking the time!!

      Ditto
When You shop for a check valve , make sure to get a "swing" check valve , as opposed to a spring check valve.
If You see one in person , look inside , and You will see a flapper that "swings" back and forth as You rotate the check valve end to end.

Your upside down pump has a drain on it that should be on the bottom , see yellow arrow.

Also , you could replace that rubber coupling with an upward pointing tee , and valve , you have enough room between the existing pump Union and old 90 deg. Elbow .

Adding the tee and valve , will let You prime the entire inlet from check valve to pump, by opening the valve and filling with water.
Since Your pump is above Your priming pot/ leaf trap ,there is a possibility that air will be trapped between the priming pot and the pump.

Thank you so much! We will definitely add that top fill valve as a first step. and I like getting rid of that black reducer. Hopefully, we can use the manual valve much as you suggest using a swing valve to regulate the water flow. If that manual valvue does not let us get it going, we are going to need to dig up more of the patio! Yuck!

thank you again for your clear suggestions!

To be clear you will still need the swing check valve along with the Manual valve as shown in the last picture. The only purpose for the manual valve is to fill the pump with water but without the check valve this water would simply flow into the pond.
