      Kujaku and Doitsu Showa...

Wanted to share 2 koi that are on my To Have List. Have tried a few before, but did not make the cut... so I hope these are keepers. Ogata koi at about 7 inches. Like my other post, they're here to track their development(and maybe have some fun conversations). 😁

Both have bright beni. I think the Kujacku will turn out nice, pigmentation for this age looks good to me. The Showa has unbalanced Motoguru and I think it's sumi over all will come in pretty heavy in the future.

I can tell one thing is that they are enjoying their new grown out tank and state of the art showers
And by end of year they will be BIG.

Not yet brother. New tank is just up and still cycling. I have 2 canaries in there testing the water and polluting the tank. New grow-out fish in May will then be quarantined with the canaries for another 2 weeks(I believe the minimum is 28 days, but I'm impatient and a risk taker). After that, the canaries will be rehomed and the kujaku, doitsu showa, and tancho sanke will get to join the grow-out koi in the new grow-out tank. I think that is the prudent process, let me know.

I do have reservations on a new tank though. I think I do fine growing out my fish in my small crowded pond. 3 years in a row I've got some decent results, so I'd hate to break away from what has worked for me. Maybe I'll keep 1 koi from each batch in my main pond.

The kujaku so far is a really strong eater, she will probably grow well. To me, the beni on the kujaku is pretty thick(my limited observation), but the head is not as clean as I would like it to be. My preference is for the doitsu show though, so I'm cheering for it. Not a strong eater, so growth will probably be modest. I am looking for the sumi to fill in more, especially on the head area. I think that would balance the sumi to beni ratio, with some shiroji to accent.

I think the sumi in the head will darken and it seems to take a little more time. I was talking to someone at the last show and he explained that it will come in later and showed us before and after pics of his show fish. He took home 4 trophies so he is doing something right.

I like them both. The Hikari on the Kujaku is very nice and thick. I like the Beni.
The Doistu Showa is appealing too. I'm not worried about the Motoguru; it's fine on a 7" koi. The dark side will pull back as it matures and the other gill has loads of Sumi so you may get lucky and have it show up on that side. I'll cross my fingers for you.
Sumi typically develops from the rear to the front so you wouldn't want the Sumi on the head to be fully in yet or the fish would be done. This one has somewhere to go in the development phase. Sumi also can contract, like on the fins, as a koi matures. It's called baby or tosai Sumi. It would depend on the lineage but it happens. I suspect the pattern will appear more balanced at maturity. As many SU as I've seen in the tosai phase, Sumi can do wild things on tosai and koi can look very different as they mature.
I look forward to pics later on of these.
Still learning as I go but y'all can call me Marilyn

I'll say something when I feel I have something worth saying. I'm not a fan of flapping my lips just because they are there.

They're both eating, the kujaku just has a bigger appetite than the Showa. Mother nature is cranking up the heat, so we'll see how that stimulates their appetite further.

I felt that the Showa has better tail tube, but the kujaku has more height... in the end, female will dominate the male(at least in size)?
