      New House Sick Koi?

Recently bought a house with a koi pond so I am new to the Koi hobby. All the koi seem to look and act fine except for the one pictured. His fins don't look anything like the others. Is this some kind of disease or will they continue to grow out? He is quite a bit smaller that the others.

Welcome to the forum. Do you have test kits (drop, not strip) to check your water parameters? KH, PH, Ammonia, and Nitrite need to be checked ASAP. Healthy water means healthy fish. This is a tough time of year for fish- coming out of winter- often owners don't/can't do good water changes and the bio in the filters has died back. I will let others chime in on what specifically ails your fish but would encourage you to be doing water changes as much as possible. Make sure you use an appropriate water conditioner based on your source water. Prime or Safe are pretty good. 10% change per day can really help.
Just because the other fish look healthy does not mean that they are ok. When water starts to go bad they don't all respond at the same time. Someone has to be first to show you signs of bad water. This fish is likely it.

I would say it looks more like a deformity. Most breeders would cull these out but when people sell from backyards and such sometimes every fish counts. The smaller fins would impede feeding and in turn its growth resulting in it being on the smaller size. I would test your water to be sure, but I would wager this was there since birth.

This is a longfin (butterfly) koi. Possibly should have been culled out at a small size. But it could have been from injury to the fins. A longfins fins are very delicate and even a net can injure them.

I have a lot of butterfly koi and many raised here. A few developed bad fins as they grew with no know infections or injuries. It just occurs sometimes. The fins will never be normal or regrow normally.

I was thinking it may be just a defect as I wasn't seeing anything that looked like it during my searches. I just got my test kit and the levels are ok but I will start changing out some water as I am able.

      Agreed. Deformity. Looks fine otherwise.

Sorry to be late.......but it is indeed a deformity....as ademink and others have stated.
