      String Algae

I have never treated for algae before. I was wondering what everyone uses.
      Thanks!

I use Baquacil Oxidizer. I buy it at a swimming pool supply store.
1 cup for every 2000 gallons of water every other day till the string algae is gone. Usually gone in 3 or 4 treatments.

Never chemicals. Use UV in addition to rapid turnover of water through filtration and at least 20% water change per week. Pond is in full sun.

UV has no effect on string algae.

When you kill it off, watch for ammonia spikes. The algae is consuming ammonia and growing, so if you kill it all off, the ammonia will show up in testing and should be monitored. I would look into your biological filtration and see if you could boost that as well to handle your ammonia better to prevent future growth.

Down here last month we had freezes and it impacted my bio-filter. I noticed algae growing in large amounts all over the walls. I could have done PP or or the Oxidizer, but opted to avoid the chemicals. I cut back on feedings and kept up with water changes. I also had room in my filter to add more media so I packed it in. The fish cleaned the walls as there were no pellets being fed. What they didn't eat eventually started falling off after being starved of nutrients from my bio filtration building back up in the existing media and colonizing in the new media.

This will be my first full season with my pond up and running. Had lots of wind yesterday and today I was removing small branches from the pond and discovered some string algae. I'm assuming it was string algae for it looked like 6 inches of green twine.

Anyway, I have a bead filter as well as a uv light. The uv light is the last piece of equipment the water goes through before it returns to the pond. Wouldn't any string algae be taken care of by the sieve and the bead filter? Also why wouldn't you place the uv light before the bead filter?

Sting algae is not free floating, It grows from the sides of your pond or on waterfalls that water passes over. UV's have no effect on it.

Thanks to Billy's suggestion I have used Baquacil Oxidizer for the past two seasons. Does a great job of clearing up the string algae. Follow his directions and you will be very happy.

I’ve never heard of baquacil oxidizer. That’s why I suggested hydrogen peroxide, I know that works and is easy to find.

For 2000 gallons you would need a half gallon of drugstore peroxide and if you did 4 treatments that would be 2 gallons. With baquacil oxidizer you would use 4 cups and you would have 12 cups for later use. A gallon of 3% hydrogen peroxide cost about $15. A gallon of baquacil oxidizer 27% hydrogen peroxide cost about $16.

I've never been able to find Baquacil locally either and although Baquacil is still a significant savings, Walmart has 3% HP
for 88 cents a quart. Be prepared for funny looks though when you go and buy 12 bottles.

Same here, on all counts! I bought 8 qts of HP, a gallon of bleach for sterilizing some equipment, and a bag of fiberfill for filter element. The lady at the register said it was a weird purchase, so I told her we had a guy at the cabin with a bullet in him (I made sure she knew I was kidding before leaving).

I use HP to clear the water after pp. I assume I should be able to use baquacil oxidizer to save cost too, right?

      hp.
