Could be just the photo but It is a long fish with a tail section that looks short and thin. To confirm it, a video with fish swimming will help.

Your purchase criteria was for breeding? Which farm did it come from?

I stole this photo from Momotaro's auction site. This is a two year old. See the difference in proportion and thickness?

Momotaro is still adding new fish for the March auction. I expect the list to get much longer.

Can this auction be done on-line or do you have to be in Japan?

You don't need to be in Japan but you do need a US dealer to bid for you and arrange the shipping and export/import paperwork in case you won.

This is a 2016 photos of a Momotaro auction fish that I bought from Russ. Didn't cost an arm and a leg but did cost me a finger.

The fish is bigger now and still improving.

Small nisai (47cm, very small by Momotaro standard) when I bought it.

This is a video of the Parent stock for the Femal from Purdin. I have a lot to learn about the genetics so some input could help me. Even if my female doesn't show the best conformation at this time can she still pass on the conformatin of her parents? And depending on my culling abilities still produce some high qulity Koi? If the conformation of the male input is better, how much influence does a male contribute?

I'm going to link you to a good article about koi by Mike Snaden of Yume Koi. It is full of pictures and text that should be of assistance to you. It stresses the importance of bloodlines for koi selection which is imperative for a breeding program. If you don't understand the traits each koi is bringing to the party, it just becomes a crapshoot.

My understanding from a discussion I had years ago was that females impart body to the fry and males it is skin and pattern. There are other factors like sumi and beni which I don't recall us delving into.

Can a koi exceed its own genetics and produce something better than it is, sure, that is what selective breeding is all about. Taking something that is a fluke and making it the norm over successive generations of breeding. The problem is, as a new koi breeder, will you be able to identify which are superior at the point of culling?

      http://www.yumekoi.com/images/storie...tYouPayFor.pdf

I wish you the very best in your venture and would suggest you start with koi as close (genetically) to your ideal as possible. For example, find out which lines Purdin uses in their pairings so you have a better idea of where certain traits are coming from in your results.
Still learning as I go but y'all can call me Marilyn

I'll say something when I feel I have something worth saying. I'm not a fan of flapping my lips just because they are there.
