Great looking Kohaku and Showa … and with the weather getting nice and warm.
Looking forward to how these pairings work out. Any spawning(s) or fry yet?
Did not get any spawning last spring. Initially I wrote it off as getting them home to late in the season. Now I'm not sure because I ended up losening both females a few months later from "Dropsy". The first to go was the Showa, only 45 days after getting her home. I did not do a necropsy on this one because I didn't feel like I would know what to look for (now wishing I would have anyway). The Kohaku died a month later. This time I did have a friend come over for a necropsy. She is an Ichtheologist and well versed in all things fish. We found that the liver was destroyed by a faty tumor and diet was blamed for the cause of death. They were in a large grow out pond and I was feeding Hikairi Grow. In such a short period of time I am not sure if this is to blame or not. These were the only two fish in a large pond and an abundance of natural food was available. I will be hesitant to ever feed a grow formula food again though. Both of these fish were beautiful and I was so excited to have tham and there loss is still very hard to take.
So on November 10th I was at Purdin Koi harvest event for my first time to pick out some new Oyagoi. Again I won't be bringing them home until spring. below are some pictures of the females I purchased. The two kohaku bred by Purdins are from they'er Rykidozan female. The Showa is from the Ueno female spawn.

Mike, so sorry about the loss of those two females. Good to know about the fatty liver and i wonder if someone can weigh in on whether or not this could be caused by "growth" food. Like you, I fed up my 250 best with growth toward the middle of the season, although it was only one meal of three a day i was feeding. the other two meals were blackwater creek gold-n. I'll watch for any deaths next year and also do necropsy if should i have the need.
i like the looks of your new fish. what are you going to feed?
i'm on the run but i'm watching your thread.

Sincere condolences for your loss of those girls, especially with such great potential. But glad hear you are going to bring in some nice replacements for a fresh start next year. I've been watching some of Gardner's videos on the Purdin spawns, and look forward to seeing how this branch of the family line continues at your place.
Thanks Matt. Stay tuned.
Some one was intersted in a couple of photos from the necropsy of the Kohaku I lost.

Thanks for this, Mike. Good to visualize and record for future.
Again, dam*ed shame.

Hi, I am curious, did they look obese fat overfed fish?
Overfed is not the right wording but basically, just gannets that cleared the plate when the food was presented.
I have just very recently lost two female Chagoi.
They were from the same spawnining 4 or 5 years old. The one fish measured 73 cm. the second fish was 67cm
Their body appearances looked like one big evenly shaped tumor.
No upward curved spines.
They were presumably just made up of layers of fat.
They seem to go into a just below the surface slow cruise, showing no interest in what's going on around them.
They were a very special to me, a reddy brick brown color.

They did apear to be overly fat to look at them in the pond, or not at least compared to some of the "Grand Champs" you see in photos but my frinds first words on opening her up were "Morbidly obese" Below are a couple of photos of how they looked in the pond
Thank you.
My fish were definitely MORBIDLY OBESE.
A friend of mine stays clear of the females.
He feels female Chagoi are a problem when it comes to mealtime
Only males for him.
Keeping fish seems to be a constant 1 step forward and 10 steps back type hobby.
The mutts are there, still begging.

Hi Matt. They wer only around for a few months.
