      Hariwake

What are some pros and cons to this Hariwake koi? I am not sure what to look for in its pattern, but any help would be awesome! The fish is around 25cm in length.

If possible, it would be best to get a pic with the body straight. A turning pic is okay but it shouldn't be the only shot available to view for a proper critique of conformation.
My query on this koi would be to find out if this was purchased as tosai or if it is a nisai. The eye size kind of lends me to believe it is a small nisai.

The beni may have some stability issues. If you look at the color at the shoulder and the color after the dorsal, there is a marked difference. There is also a light scale on the left shoulder. This could have been a knocked out scale or an indication of weak beni there. Ideally, hope for it to be a knocked out scale that regains its color but it may a bit of a gamble. I hate it when koi lose scales in beni plates.
The pattern is heavy but doable and the Hariwake looks decent. The pattern, potentially is better than a lot of Hariwake patterns I see but we'll hope the beni solidifies and consolidates.

I can't quite tell, but is there color in the tail?

Thanks for the info! Tomorrow ill try and get a better picture of the fish more straight. As for the light scale area on the shoulder it turns out to be a knocked off scale when i looked at it. For the color in the tail, it does seem to have some on the top of it.

Thank you for the reply. I suspected the beni in the tail but couldn't be sure. Unfortunately, one of the characteristics of Hariwake IME, is the the beni can be very unstable. It shows up where you don't want it. It can get darker spots in it, etc. I've always liked them but good ones are like unicorns.

It can indeed be difficult to find hariwake with good patterns. This one's pattern is easily better than most.

I don't believe so. The first pic is when the gills are out during breathing, the following pic they are closed.

I think that this is a very small and I would venture to say, underfed, example and because the eyes are enlarged it gives the head an off appearance. It is why I inquired about the age in my first post. I don't know the history of its origins but it may have been overcrowded and stunted to some degree in early life.

You are right.I remember nearly shooting my self in the foot the last time I looked at this pic without going back to look at the different pics shown.

      OOps sorry.
