      Kindai Showa Nisai (Yamaguchi)

I'm going to try to make a point of posting progress photos of my fish as I slowly upgrade from pond-grade to higher quality fish. There's always a nicer fish out there but I'm hoping I can learn as I watch these fish grow.

This is a Kindai-style Showa Nisai from a lesser known breeder (Yamaguchi). Measured on 03 Jan 2018 at 25.5" so it hopefully has growth potential. We will see how the sumi comes in over time.

      Any thoughts welcome.

This photo is from the fall (the fish on the left):

This video is from today (03 Jan 2018).

I'll be adding this fish to my pond in the spring.

beni is nice and shirogi is clean. seems nobody will comment to make an assessment. so i figured I'll get something going. Vegas koi might have set all time high on views and comments but seems everyone is afraid to tread certain waters on here

Thanks, Kevin. Honestly, I'm just trying to learn so feedback is welcome. At the price range I'm working with none of these fish are AJKS GC contenders so amid hopefully good qualities there will be less than ideal aspects. I'm happy to hear both the good and the bad.

From my novice perspective, this is another fish where the sumi is anticipated but has not yet fully emerged. Not a bad thing, necessarily, just means taking a long term view. At 25.5" inches currently as a nisai the fish has quite a bit of bulk. I honestly don't know if that is good or bad. Unfortunately neither the photo nor the video are of high enough resolution to see the scales/skin at close up range.

im more novice than you buddy. ajks is beyond me for now. but nice koi and I do believe the sumi will come in with time. most my 12 inch sanke have nice sumi now and will be gone next year. i guess i could sucker someone into buying them now. but i can't do that to anyone

I think it's beyond most folks, myself included. I'd love to go see it sometime just to take in all the koiporn though.

      That's good feedback

But seriously I'm pretty deep into the addiction and I'm spending a lot of time trying to learn how to see what the experts see. It's slow going!

You need to look further back than when you became a member for higher views and posts. Years ago it was common for critique threads to go for pages. Those threads are of value for those looking to improve their eyes for koi shopping. The point being, there are only so many times the same thing can be said before it gets redundant and the need to participate wanes.

When I was new to koi keeping, I spent countless hours visiting various dealers in the Norcal area. I saw thousands of koi and at import times, was probably koi viewing/shopping 2-3 times a week for a couple of years. It was a crash course in what to look for, beni stability, conformation flaws and so forth. I also poured over the online auction pics available from Dainichi, SFF and Momotaro. They were beyond my budget but all koi have issues and you have to take the initiative to learn how to identify them. I have a cadre of friends that I can call to discuss the auctions and often do. Having a limited budget made me learn deal breaker flaws; bad body, bad beni, poor sumi, etc. A huge deal breaker for me was always subpar skin. If a koi doesn't have nice skin, I just don't enjoy it as much no matter how thick the beni is or ink-like the sumi.

That is why, for those looking to advance in the hobby, I suggest doing something similar. See as many koi as possible. You learn to trust your eye and not what someone says about a koi. Beyond that, you end up having to take the plunge on koi you believe in. If you get it wrong and it doesn't turn out, fine. Call it a learning experience. If it does turn out, nothing is as rewarding as seeing your confidence in a koi play out when it matures into a beauty in your pond. Develop your own network of koi buddies to talk about koi. The education if priceless.

Sorry to hijack the thread but I felt that needed saying. There are few members with much experience commenting in this section and it is a shame but I expect it is the natural progression of an online resource. There is a constant turnover of members and those with more experience tend to step back. And it doesn't mean that experienced members will always agree on koi. We all bring our own tendencies and preferences as our individual filters. Koi are art and just like artwork on canvases, we like what we like.

Still learning as I go but y'all can call me Marilyn

Now, on to an eval of this koi.
I am unfamiliar with the breeder but this is the kind of koi I tend to enjoy. You need the sumi to come up but I like her skin. The beni is fully saturated and I'm hoping that as she continues to grow, it does some stretching with her. The body has fair balance but is a touch on the short side. That means she won't have a long look at maturity but rather a bulkier appearance. it's not a big deal as that is often what is preferred at shows.

Tell her to start working on that sumi.

I was going to say something along those lines... I dont know if she is short or just front heavy. It will all boil down to how her body finishes when her pattern fills in (final product). If her growth is balanced then she will have a very powerful look. If her front end out-grows her tail end the "short" look will be exaggerated. She has a very powerful frame and does not seem to have a belly problem. I like this fish a lot, and I know buying a koi with a frame like that could not have been cheap. Please keep us updated on this fish.

Thanks! I see posts like this as being helpful not just for the initial feedback but also the progress of the fish over time. I'll definitely update (hopefully in the spring and again in the late fall).

You still have loads of dealers in that area. I'm not aware of any that bring in as many tosai as Champion Koi and it's a great way to train your eye.
You curry a lot of information from some of the dealers but true knowledge comes from taking that information and furthering your understanding personally. Take the information you're gathering and develop YOUR OWN opinion. That is true understanding. Parroting what others say is really of little value unless there is a gut level understanding of what is being said.

Btw, look for posts made by Super Kindai. His information is invaluable.
