Happy New Year! Black Beard Algae

      Hi Everyone. Happy New Year.

My pond is about 9 mos old. There is a nice coat of green carpet algae growing since late summer, but now I'm seeing some patches of black algae. No direct sun in winter.

      Should I be concerned?

Water temp is 52F this past week (SoCal heat wave; 48F prior 2 weeks, only fed twice then), fish is hungry so I'm feeding about 1 table spoon in AM when they beg.

0 ammonia/nitrite. 20-30?ppm nitrate before water change on API drop kit. kh ~180. About 20% water change from backwashing and filter cleaning weekly.

8 small koi, 8" smallest, 14" largest, the rest are 10-12". And a 2" apple snail that is surprisingly still alive and chucking along.

Pond is 32" deep, about 1000gl bare bottom with water fall over river rocks, planning to either expand or move this year. UltimaII 2000 with mesh pre-filter and BD. turned UV light off 6 mos ago, water is clear.

      Thank you.

happy New Year. I don't really know much about this algae but your readings seem great..20-30 ppm nitrates is pretty good and the kh at 180 seems about right since you are using a bead filter.

do you have any plants in the pond?

It may be the algae dying off from the cold....Not sure, but this will bump you up and maybe get some more knowledgeable folks to answer....Good Luck
