      You could also make life much easier for your folks by purchasing a PondOVac4 model pond vacuum and also one of the small size pool leaf skimmer nets to first remove the leaves. If you do this 2-3X/month based on seasonal leaf droppage, you should be able to eliminate most of the "clogging" issues. I agree, keep the system you have now and add the second pump for the waterfall. If you use a decent quality submersible pump (not one from the big box stores), you should be fine for quite a while.
