      Pond water turned black recently

We took our filter and pump for winter and temps have already been dropping to 28f. Fish have been doing well everyday and we went out today to check on them and water is black. We cant see more then 2 inches down. We have 3 large aerators going and 2 large floating heaters. There is a net cover to keep leaves out however when we went out today leaves were weighing down the net and sitting in the water. Our leaves have black spots on them, not sure if that is relevant. I will check water parameters shortly.

With 3 large aerators running did you stir up a bunch of gunk that was on the bottom? Take a clear glass jar and scoop up some pond water. Hold it up to a bright light and evaluate.

is there anyway you can support the net better and keep the leaves out of the water? doesn't take long for tannins to dirty up the water.

It sounds like tannins leached out from the leaves. If so, it is totally harmless to the fish, and in fact, can be benificial; however, it is an aesthetic problem. I usually do nothing about it until spring. If my normal water changes do not clear the water by April, I add one quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide per 1000 gallons of water to remove the discoloration.

Take a sample and you will quickly see if the water is tinted dark or there a lot of small solids.

good to hear. my pond went from clear to dark brown last year. wind came in at different direction and just nailed my pond with leaves. I wanted to be able to see them so got all the leaves out and did a mild pp to clear it back up. scares me not being able to see them when water is colder.
