Konishi Karashigoi Tosai (likely pond grade)

Kodama Koi farm acquired 50 Konishi Karashigoi tosai and offered them at a price that I felt was worth the risk. Customers were not given the option to pick out their specific fish from the lot of 50 and the pricing reflected that. I have no show aspirations but it would sure be cool if one of these fish got to 30" long. One is doitsu and the other is not. They sure are tiny at the moment! We will see how they do--I have pretty low expectations but we will see.

Look at the huge tail tube on that doitsu!!

(Ok, that's a joke. I can never tell what people are talking about when they mention the tail tube. I would need to see a bunch of side-by-sides to differentiate.)

If you put them in big water and feed them with a shovel, they might make that and more .

One month later and they are getting bigger, especially the doitsu. Hard to tell because the fish is suspended at an angle in the water in this photo but it's nearly 10" long now.

Photos are definitely distorting it a bit. With the tail up and nose down in the water, the Doitsu looks like it has a world of body/shape issues. Time will tell though on what you will get. Just keep the water good, feed them, and hope for the best.

I found the photography to be a totally futile effort with these small fish. They would not sit still for an instant. I probably took 25 photos, not one of them decent.

That’s pretty good growth. I got 4 from them too. 2 of mine is also about 10” now and the other 2 is smaller. I’m expecting these to be around 15” by March.

Nice. I'm assuming they will settle down as they get older. I'll re-bowl them in the spring before I put them in the main pond.

I pulled the bigger of the two the other day. It has grown A LOT. The other one is two inches shorter but much smaller. Photos below.

These are decent but I think I need to take a class from Russ Peters on how to photograph fish. From this morning. 14" and 12" long, respectively.

The doitsu had a head start however I'd place my bet on the wagoi as finishing bigger.
      Both look great

Ohh, nice prediction!! My photos and video (below) can't convey how muscly the doitsu looks in person. It's also amazingly tall for its size. To keep its shoulder underwater I have to add as much water to the viewing bowl as a "normal" 20-inch fish. I have no idea how these fish are going to turn out (don't know gender) but they are super fun and friendly (er, I mean hungry). They are still in my 550-gallon garage setup and whenever they hear the garage door they are halfway out of the water scrambling for pellets. Honestly, they are the only part of this hobby my family can tolerate and it's because they are so fun to feed.

I've modified it slightly since taking this video and I've added a bead filter but this will give you the basic idea:

      Hi there
The doitsu karashigoi is the better one imo...
      doitsu
+ good body proportion, strong backbone, better yellow tone
      - the fin are not same color, head not long enough for a tosai

      scales
+ good body, since the color kinda pale the white fin not so contrast
      - short pointy head, weaker half end of the body

surprisingly its rather hard to find a very good kawarimono
i've keep so many tosai karashigoi in the past and not once they get me satisfied
note for karashi from konishi these day...
they cost much more expensive than marudos or maruseis for tosai with same quality, they grow faster (3-4 inch a month), but they get higher deformed percentage (open gill flap, bent backbone) but they surely grow bigger than others :P

these are the last karashi that i kept (sold them last month), they are cheap marudos tosai (got them @5 inch grow them 2,5 months)

      - the bigger ones has imbalance belly line
      - the smaller ones has short head (head growth cant keep with the body growth)
