      Great Lotus Dig of 2017

Ok, so I dug up as many lotus tubers as I could stand with my hands in the cold water. I made sure I had at least 2 growing tips, now should I just put them in water in my cool basement? Someone else mentioned refrigeration? Would you do that in plastic bag of water or what?

I do not dig my tubers until early spring but you have dug yours so you need to store them. I would suggest storing them like I do my tropical lily tubers. Put the tubers in slightly damp sand in baggies to keep them from being too wet or from drying out, and store them over the winter in your cool basement. They need to stay between 40*f and 50*f. I would be afraid to store them in water as they would most likely rot. You only need enough sand to cover them.

Thanks, Frank! I have them put to bed in some sand right now.

I wonder if I could do a makeshift covering/greenhouse for the containers outdoors? I think they are just too heavy to move far...

You can make a "cold frame" over them with plastic. Make a frame of wood or pvc like you would if building greenhouse and cover it with plastic. it does not need to be tall, but it does need to be strong enough to handle any snow on it, but try to make it where the snow or rain will slide off as much as possible. It would be better if no snow would accumulate on it.
If you cannot build cold frame, cover the pots with plastic as best you can to try and hold as much heat in the pot as possible. plus it allows heat to build up from the sun during the day.
