Thanks for sharing the progression photos. Good or bad, it is always good to share the learning experience.

The beni of this kohaku is showing some signs of breaking down.

For those of us trying to learn, could you show or describe where this is happening?

      We are all still learning.

I have circled the areas with questionable looks. The big clues are usually at the beni edge plus the consistency of the beni itself.

Depending on age, if still young, like under 5 yrs old let's say, it could also be that the beni is tightening and the kiwa is beginning to finish. I really don't see that many places where the beni isn't homogenous. I also see fukurin developing which in a picture can make the beni look uneven due to uneven surfaces of reflection in a camera's eye. I've seen this look in both instances, good and bad, but to be sure, it really needs to be seen in person.

I am not predicting that the beni of the kohaku will fail next summer, far from it. I was pointing out the signs that I wouldn't want to see on my koi. Saw-tooth and concave beni edge have always led to bad outcomes for me. Ultimately, the genetics will decided if beni will stay or degrade. The differences between beni consolidation and beni breaking-down are speed and duration.

Hopefully, the OP posts progression pics in the Spring and again in Fall to see further changes. That should tell a better story.

I have to say that I Ive really enjoyed this thread. After all isn't this what koi keeping is all about and the exact reason we are all here, to learn? I would love to see a permanent forum heading purely for progression pics where we can discuss and offer our opinions and then in the the future be proven wrong or right. It would be a great learning tool.
It is disappointing to see the negative comments just because the fish were not perfect. It also stops lots of people (me included) from wanting to participate in this discussion or any discussion for that matter.

Yeah, most of the threads seem to be like, "What do you think of this youngster?", a few opinions, which is good, but sadly that's the end of it. However the forums are arranged, it would be nice to see the thread-starters come back and add to the old threads, posting photos a year, two, three, etc, later. I wish the "Amateur Breeders" would do more of that in their forum as well (if any are kept for season two, three, etc), rather than just posting "season one".

You have indeed been good about posting update photos. Thank you for that. Unfortunately, most have not. Checking the threads in this "Less Serious Critique" forum that were started in 2015, only about 1% had follow-up photos in the next year (2016), and none had second year follow-up photos in 2017. For threads started in 2015 in the "Serious Critique" forum, only about 10% had photo updates in 2016 (including some that were about 3 months later), and only about 5% had second year update photos in 2017. So, it would be nice to see more updates.

Same problem in the ER section - some long interesting threads but in the end... most don't give follow ups. But when they do (good or bad)... awesome.

For the few who are wondering how these $100 and $65 koi turned out. Sorry for the poor photos, they were too active and constantly circling the round bowl... guess it's time to invest in a rectangular tub.

So how have they changed in the last 6 months? I think they both bulked up a little, the Beni seems darker/deeper, and no idea on their length(did not measure).

Sanke develop more sumi... existing became bolder and added new spot(or 2). There was an area that has a lighter layer over the scale... hikui? I did gently scrape over the scale. Removed a layer of it, but probably not all of it. Waiting and see how it heals or re-develops.

Kohaku beni seem to be holding so far, and is evening out a bit. We'll see her(I think is a her) back in November.
