      Goldfish and Barbels

I bought five new GF late in the spring for the pond and they were about 3+ inches at the time. I lost the 5th one somehow; I'm not sure what got it. Anyway, these fish have always been skittish and wold not come up to feed when anyone was around. So today was the day to bring them in, as the water temp is starting to get too cold for feeding. I expected a challenge catching them, as the pond is pretty deep. But I managed to round them up pretty quickly. One looks like a standard Comet and the other three are much bigger and very colourful. The odd thing is that they also have barbels. The wife commented that the fat one looks big enough to eat. He declined the offer. He pretty much spans a 5 gallon bucket.

Anyway, I assume these are just some kind of regular GF with possibly some Koi in the mix? Although I'm glad that they are nice fish, at the rate they are growing, they might challenge my indoor tank by spring. My indoor tank is 90 gallons with a 55 gallon sump and I change about 20 gallons a day.

Any thoughts on what kind of fish these are?

I added the pic in their bucket, not the best of their barbels I realize. I'll add some better ones later.

Thanks, the three on the bottom all have the same build and are much bigger. The orange and white one on top is a runt and does not have any barbels. The grey one with the orange nose is the big one of the bunch. My other GF took many years to reach this size, these guys did it in about 4 months. I did not realize how big they were as they always hung out at the bottom of the pond.

I think I paid less than $10 US for these guys.

      New pic

Here's a pic of the one fish. Unfortunately the glass is a bit dirty, but if you blow it up you can see it's barbels.

The barbels and the shape of the mouth definitely says koi.

The color and the way the scales shimmer on the top half of the fish says Koi too. Only the fish with the red on its back is a goldfish. The rest are Koi. Goldfish don't have barbels and they don't come in those color patterns. Also in the bucket, you can see that the Koi are much rounder than the Comet. You have 3 Koi and 1 Sarassa Comet. The red and white one is not a "runt", he's just a goldfish and won't get as big as the Koi.

Thanks, I knew the runt was a GF. Sadly I think the one I lost was also a Koi. The grey one with the orange nose is a serious gobbler. He originally looked back and red, but now that I can see him up close, he is actually a series of black and grey stripes

      2 OR 4 barbels
some 1/2 breed koi/goldfish have two barbels not 4
and very koi colors and patterns
but tend to be short and fat/deep/wide
my oldest mix at 4 years is a under a foot long but as wide and deep as my full grown older koi
head is very koi like body like a goldfish with a very abrupt change at the tail

your fish look more koi like in the body

some claim about a 1/4 of the 1/2 breeds are fertile
so 3/4 koi are possible ?
