My First Azukari koi - Taniguch Kohaku

So, the first picture is the one that made me decide to get her. I loved her body. And to be very honest, i knew the beni was a risk but i felt it was high enough quality that it might fill-in. It didnt. BUT, I think the body improved and I am still very happy with her. So id like for all of your opinions of her: past, present, and future.

Congrats on surviving the first mud pond spa.

I'd reckon that you're right...beni looks weak in spots.
Frame looks nice plus large tail tube although the head looks small.
      Have they sexed it?

Some of it may be the angles of the photos.

It has not been sexed but I assume its a female. The head does look a tad small to me but it has the length. And although there were clues to the beni not being strong in the first photo, the beni did not look weak (to me anyway). To me it looked like ok beni that was consolidating. Now it looks a bit thin and flat. It was a gamble. Im still not sure if it was a good one yet lol. I will say though, that I am not a "high-end" koi collector. I do the best I can with my current budget and I generally get fish that improve and are beautiful. Im happy with this fish for a lot of reasons; the beni just isnt one of them.

Thanks for sharing. The fish did well in the mud. The body does look like it has potential to become a bigger fish. For the beni, you can pray that the skin will thicken up and cover up the fuzzy spots.

While this is only a Nisai, the beni can look this way as it's till developing. It does "appear" weak at this time in a few places, but I've seen fish like this go both ways - good and bad. Let's hope that this breeders quality genetics come through and a couple of the patterns actually split where they're located and then become more clearly pronounced. I agree, it's got a nice frame.

Overall, this is a nice kohaku.
The scalation and white skin are good.
The head size is OK. Probably the high hump and the wide shoulder make its head looks a bit small.
The beni is still developing. Hopefully, it will clean up the patterns a little bit.

      Just for a newbie education.

On the second and third picture, we can spot that on the center of the hump area there are some fuzzy beni or inconsistent beni. I raised up this question because currently im having a same situation on my Momotaro showa.

Will the beni eventually be more consistent as it grows? or it will just remain the same. Is it possible to use a colour food to generate a fine and consistent beni in this situation?

      Thanks.

The shoulder area is where a koi stretches the most during growing season and can do one of three things. Completely lose the beni, stretch it to cause weaker beni to look more non-uniform, or with high quality beni and good nerikome, allow the color to stretch but create hoshi which is when the center of the scales remains dark (future color of all beni) and the surrounding edges of the scales and the skin between the scales to be a lighter yet very even color throughout the fish. When you buy young fish even up to 3 yrs old, the last trait is the one that should be sought out but again, it MUST be the same look on every pattern section of beni on the fish.
