Amateur question:
I read that Ki Utsuri’s are a ki bekko x karasu. What would one expect to get if one bred two Ki Utsuri with each other? More Ki Utsuri? Or a whole range of different color fish?
Thanks

Okay I'm starting to understand how this works.
Thanks
I just started keeping Koi so I've never bred them, but looking at the gene tree, with a Ki Utsuri pair, you'll probably get some Ki & Aka Bekko, along with a bunch of Higoi and darker Koi/Carp.
And possibly some Hi & Shiro Utsuri, and a couple Showa?
I don't know what the Japanese breeders use to produce Showa, but with Ki Utsuri parents, out of the 100,000 eggs I'm guessing you'll be lucky to get even just 10 Showa that are nice quality. Maybe even less?
...Up until a few months ago, I had no idea that Nishikigoi were man-made and only been around for a few hundred years. Pretty mind blowing how much dedication went towards the breeding of dull colored wild carp, and how much they've evolved.
Thanks for posting that gene tree. That helps me understand. They must cull thousands of fish to get few decent ones.
