1 red scale protruding on Butterfly koi

Water parameters to follow. Water change 2 days ago. Any thoughts how to treat this? Not sure which route to go. Anti-parasitic or anti-bacterial or both. Other 2 fish are in good health.

Was this a slow process or did it happen suddenly?

Doitsu koi have a tendency at times to get their large scales caught on something. This causes the underlying tissue of scale to get damaged or torn. And this is why the scale is sticking out a little and turns red. Just keep water parameters good and stable with good water and it should heal on its own. If it starts to get worse than you well have to treat with iodine and possibly have to remove scale.

If it were a slow situation and gradually turned red. Than that would more than likely be a bacterial issue.

I have quite a few doitsu butterfly koi with the large mirror scales. Just keep an eye on it, but I have not had to treat any in years as they all seem to heal without an issue. Sometimes they just knock them loose, sometimes they fall off later, and sometimes they are just totally knocked or pulled off. I happens a lot during spawning activities.

Like a finger nail. It depends on how severe the damage is of the scale pocket. A lost scale well usually grow back.

Are these koi in an aquarium with gravel? How many gallons and what did it hit?
