Existing mud pond to support Koi?

      HI All,

I was wanting to clean up a large pond at my home to make it swimable but hey why not have some colorful fish for my young girls. It measures 180 x 65 feet and is a consistent 6 foot deep with 1 to 1 slope around the edges. I calculate approx 430,000 gallon. It was dug 10 or 15 years ago by previous owner and landscaped nicely but surely no liner. It stays full on it's own from groundwater and a tile line supposedly from neighbors hobby farm field. I've seen it drop only 1 foot in August when we r watering the lawn heavily. (Irrigation source) The pond turns green and has an odor on and off through out the summer. I have installed a wind powered aerator with 2 air stones . Pond looks better after only a couple days. There are already sunfish, frogs, crayfish and turtles. Also a muskrat and blue heron regularly. Any and all suggestions appreciated please.

      Thanks,

      JAmie

Welcome and thanks for joining Koiphen!

Do you have some pictures? It helps to have an idea of the surrounding area, but sounds beautiful!

      Enjoy the forum!

      Beautiful property!
Hopefully some with experience with your pond size and situation will chime in to help.

I am sure some koi would do just fine. Only add koi that are of a size the current predator fish cant eat though. 10 - 12 inches.

      Jamie, welcome to koiphen!
What a beautiful property! How did you take those shots? by drone? It's lovely to have a natural pond with so many creatures in it. I have three mud ponds and the first one was a garden feature. Then, i got koi. Just so you know, koi love to stir up the mud. With a few koi, no problem. With time, a few become many, and many will make your water opaque, like chocolate milk. Happy to answer questions you may have.

make completely sure that only Female koi are placed in that pond. you are going to need all the koi going in there to be 20inches or more in length to be close to certain.... If you put one male and one female in there you'll have more ugly fish in there than you ever dreamed possible...and the pind will go to hell as well.

females CAN get eggbound...they get bigger, and are easier to PROVE they are female, and many more fish species have the ability for a male to become female if no females are present than the reverse. Kigrl, maybe you can share your experience with having had koi spawn in such a pond? What od you think would happen?

UMKC has an auction every spring and fall. Great opportunity to pick up some gently used fish at a good price.
Also an opportunity to mix and mingle with some resident koi experts and get advice and guidance.
Hope to see you at an event.

Luke, I agree with you . Koi of only one sex will defeat overpopulation. I would choose male -- and not many due to koi turning mud ponds muddy and may be unattractive so close to the house.

With actual experience with mud ponds, like myself, you know that you can try but it will not be perfect

There is always some of the of the opposite sex culprits in there. It doesn't take many

      Some of the mud ponds.

Light stocking and massive aeration is the key
