      14" Koi from Petco

I have had this fish for a little over a year, and is the only fish in the pond right now. I'm getting ready to add more (won't be purchasing from petco ). I would like to know what you all think. Looks like a Kohaku mutt (has a black scale on the right side of the dorsal fin). I've always thought she was a female.

Yes, it is a kohaku "mutt" but it appears quite healthy. As you've had it all by itself for a year now, introduction of new fish should require quarantine of the new ones to make sure they have no foreign bodies along for the ride and that they acclimate to your water conditions before saying hi to this one, who from what I can see, is a male.

How large is this pond you have and what type/amount of filtration do you currently employ?

      Thanks!

The pond is 1,200 gallons (4,500 Liters) and is filtered by two modified rain barrels. The first serves as mechanical with a 9,000' roll of poly (pallet) strapping material jammed in it. The second has 2 cubic feet (50 ish Liters) of fluidized K1. The waterfall has a few plants in it, and there is a decent amount of water hyacinth in the pond.

      Edit: Here's a picture

      Thanks for the compliments

I'll be installing some slate mosaic tile on the concrete block under those barrels tomorrow (and hiding that last bit of liner).

Next up is building a new shed on the left

As you only have a single fish right now, your somewhat okay but once you get a few more, they will begin to munch on your hyacinth, especially the leaves and the roots, and it will make a real mess in the pond and your mechanical filter. Those roots are like hair. Ever try to clean the hairs off your neck right after a haircut? Yep, you got it. Also, if you look at you pic, the skimmer is in the corner and there's now way for any surface debris to get to it. Kind of ruins the function factor of having it.

Thanks for your suggestions. I understand that some koi love to tear up plants, and am ready to adjust if I need to. I have already been dealing with some of the roots and they haven't been a problem.

As far as the skimmer goes, it works very well where it is. The ripples made by the waterfall push surface debris right toward it. The position of the hyacinth isn't a problem as they are constantly being pushed around by the wind (and also the fish ). In the pic they are somewhat blocking the flow, but that always changes quickly. I have very little debris falling in anyway (no trees around).

I was told the same with water lilies in the pond, I now have 13 Koi in the pond and both the plants and Koi are fine. They love to shelter under them in the sun. I think it’s because the koi have come in quite young and there’s enough food going in...just my theory...

water looks good. but with more koi they will tear up the hyacinth roots. these roots now get stuck in your mechanical filtration pads and become a pain. plants are also great sources for parasites to harbor
