      Newbie question: spawning

Today after working nights (exhausted) I found my 2 males chasing a couple of female koi. The water looks thick and smells like sushi with lots of foam. I know there is probably a ton of info here on KP but I have to sleep soon and would like to know what to do later this evening before going to work again. So I don't have time to research. Do I change the water right away? How do I protect them while all this is going on? How long will this last? One female is not being chased but I'm sure she is full of eggs too. Safety and health is my priority. Thanks.

Pond 1500G 5 koi, 3 female, 2 male, 1 goldfish, 4.5 deep with plant shelf all around. I have some floating planters.

And be prepared for ammonia spike... Prime or Safe will help protect them if one occurs.

Ours do this off and on over a couple weeks. They are so rough that I can't believe they don't die from being too stressed out. I mean the females are literally pushed around the pond sideways.

Many do die. Especially if the numbers of active males are a lot greater than females. And cause of death is even higher if only one female is spawning with many active males present.

I've found from my limited, one time experience, the sooner the eggs are cleaned off of "dried" areas the better and easier the cleanup. Especially if you really busy with work.

The koi will "feast" on the eggs in the water so I would reccomend not to feed them. I know it's growing season now but I would let them consume the eggs first and be sure to check your water parameters throughout the day!!

And, like Steve said, be ready for an Ammonia spike. Be sure to bind the ammonia like he suggested!!

Best of luck.... and HAPPY 4th of July

      What trigger the spawn?
Did you do a huge water change lately, Sid?

No not lately. I do do small water changes almost daily. My koi have been spooked lately and last night they came out. Happy they are safe being out they've decided to spawn? I've also recently put floating planters on a shallow end. I've heard that shallow ends and spawning materials (e.g. my planters) may help trigger spawning. I've also notice that lately when I rub my KU's face it is rough with breeding tubercles, so maybe just perfect timing.

Pond prime instructions says for "high concentrations of ammonia… use 60-120ml per 600 US gallon." For Safe the instructions says use 1.25g for every 75 US gallons for ammonia." I have both.
My ammonia this morning is 0. Now it's .25. I don't know what "high means" as per instructions pond prime instruction, but I don't think .25 is high. So I'm choosing to use Safe. I'm going to put 25G of safe for a 1500G pond. I've changed 10% water this morning and 10% just now. I hope I'm doing everything right.

Ph 8.2 this evening KH 6 drops.

It's very hard to od on either product. Neither is probably needed but a little insurance doesn't hurt imo.

Filters stepped up nicely. My ammonia went up as high as 1ppm and within 48 hrs it's back to zero and the pond cleared up nicely. Nitrite did not show up but nitrate did; 5ppm. I've vacuumed a TON of the eggs and changed a bit of water (more than usual) during the first day The koi also ate a lot of the eggs. Interesting observation is that with all the eggs they've eaten, very little faeces was produced. Thanks for the help.

      Mini spawning behaviour

I've seen my koi acting rough, spawning behaviour, even though they've spawned already and don't have anymore eggs. Is this normal? Tonight I came home and saw a few scales at the bottom of the pond. Would koi shed scales from growth? I couldn't figure out whose scales they were as it is dark now.

my friends koi just spawned in a brand new pond and sieve to moving bed filiters. like his 5th spawn. most the eggs were in the sieve from the skimmer line. he has never had a koi injured and does 25% water changes after spawn. uses no chemicals.

      Update:
Eggs must have gotten splashed into my floating planters last summer. By the time I saw these moving it was kind of too late to give them away. They've wintered under my winter cover and fed very little.

The bigger one started out blue colour then turned into a shiro utsuri. This one is particularly nice because in has a tall body. How rare is it to get a Shiro and who are the parents (obviously dad is the shiro)?
